Though Saint John Cassian lived and wrote centuries ago (c. 360-435), his spiritual writings continue to be important to contemporary church life and personal spirituality.  The rich religious traditions of Eastern Christianity influenced the course and development of monasticism in the West. Today, all Christians can, through Saint Cassian's focus on prayer, reach a higher state.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent synthesis May 3, 2001
By A Customer
This small, compact volume is an excellent synthesis of Cassian's prayer. The bibliography alone is a excellent piece of work for readers interested in the Christian East.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Excellent 2nd Edition (2002) May 10, 2006
The second edition (2002) of this volume is more complete than the first (2000).Chapter 5, "Cassian and Ignatius of Loyola," makes the 2nd ed. an excellent book. The pages concerning Rev. Walter Ciszek, S.J., whose cause for canonization is now being considered in Rome, are particularly relevant for any spiritual journey in the 21st century.
