4.0 out of 5 stars Encouraging and enjoyable debut from a promising artist..
Tommy Mottola has a unique gift for finding new artists. 19-year old Connecticut native Cassie is the latest addition to Mottola's hit list. Her self-titled debut album, released on P-Diddy's Bad Boy label and produced by Ryan Leslie, is a slick sounding, well produced slice of goodness that makes a nice addition to your collection.

Straight off, "Me & U"...

Am I the only one that thinks she's is awful?? I mean, don't get me wrong... she's beautiful. Hands down. But... singing??!?!?! Honestly... I think Jennifer Lopez is singing in praise now that she has found SOMEONE that sings worse than her. I mean, if Cassie can make it... ANYONE can make it. Me & U is a good song... and I liked Ditto (even though it sounds like a 12 year old's lullaby) and the hook to 'Miss Your Touch' is nice... the rest of it was just not good. The beats cover up her voice (or lack-there of) enough... but still. Were is the real talent these days? The only good things I have to say about her is she's gorgeous, she has some good producers... Ryan Leslie is a genious and he was smart enough to play it nice and safe. A bunch of less than decent, lyrically simple, easily catchy songs that every 13 year old will LOVE.

Cassie will be loved for about 2 more songs... and we will realize how terrible she is, and then we will move on to real artists... such as Christina Aguilera (whom's new album is AMAZING)

Straight off, "Me & U" shows why this song is racing up the Billboard charts, with Cassie's breathy vocals layered over a head bobbing melody. "Long Way 2 Go" is an amazing track and the next big single, with hints of trance, R&B, spoken word jazz, and rap fused with sexy lyrics in an addictive mix. Cassie makes getting dumped sound pretty good in the solid track "About Time" , but falters a bit with the formulaic tracks "Kiss Me", "Call U Out", and "Just One Nite."

The enjoyable "Hope You're Behaving (interlude)" has an acoustic guitar melody that evokes classic Spanish folk guitar. "Ditto" is a mediocre filler track, but "What Do U Want" has the blend of musical styles that sounds great in the club. The closing track "Miss Your Touch" is propelled by a disco-era fat toned bass guitar line supporting an addictive beat that will get your body moving.

This is a short album with a running time just over 35 minutes, not at all unusual for a debut artist. Despite the youthful lyrics and juvenile song titles, Leslie's beats and samples are creative and his production slick. The album's sounds are a throwback to an earlier era, freeing Cassie from the formulaic sounds of today's artists. Cassie could use some time to strengthen her young, thin voice, and would be well advised to add some songwriters besides Leslie to give her next album the length and depth she deserves. As debuts go, this is a good one. We will be hearing big things from this young ingenue in the future. Recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars The New Bad Girl?, August 15, 2006
This review is from: Cassie (Audio CD)
Cassie's album is as catchy as a clever slogan. It's pretty short and when it's a new artist, it's best kept that way. The lyrics are puerile, but reflect the person who's singing them- a little girl. But it's as cute as Cassie's little face. "Me and You", although simple, has a beat I like hearing when I'm at the club. I am worried about her being on the Bad Boy label, however. They've been in quite the slump and I think it's due to "Bad Business". I don't trust Bad Boy. Every artist who had the unfortunate opportunity of landing on this label has had some "Bad" luck to say the least. She'd better move on and quickly. Otherwise, it's 15 minutes of fame and some bad publicity for Cassie. Who knows? Maybe even a little jail time. Just ask Jennifer Lopez, Lil' Kim, and Shyne. I say get out while the gettin' is good.

4.0 out of 5 stars one hot album, August 15, 2006
By
This review is from: Cassie (Audio CD)
By the time Cassie's first album was released in August 2006, her first single had been on the Billboard pop chart for nearly four months and reached nine million plays through her MySpace page. The page, set up in late 2005, was part of a strategy that sparked a lot of chatter and eventually landed the model-turned-vocalist on Diddy's Bad Boy, a label that had been in a deep slump. With plenty of anticipation already in place, Diddy did diddly when it came to shaping Cassie's career, stepped aside, and allowed his new signing -- along with her musical partner, Ryan Leslie, a studio do-it-all with credits on songs by Britney Spears and Donell Jones -- to run her course. "Me & U," the decidedly unwholesome track that excited so many MySpace users, became one of the spring/summer hits of 2006, following the likes of Ciara's "Goodies" and Teairra Marí's "Make Her Feel Good" as a sexy, assertive single with an intricate and space-filled arrangement that doesn't batter the ears into submission. The looming synthesizer patterns, along with Cassie's upfront and plainly sung vocal, combine with an ice-cream-truck melody to give it a slightly twisted and threatening edge contained by none of its like-sounding predecessors. The second single, the snapping and swirling "Long Way 2 Go," is just as irresistible in its flippant playfulness. Cassie scolds a hopeless suitor with such cutting nonchalance -- she's basically swatting a fly -- that you can see her delivering the lines by cellphone as she eyes a display of designer shoes. The brief album could only lose steam after that, and it naturally does, though a handful of songs stimulate enough to make certain that it's no rush-released cash-in. As a vocalist, Cassie has very limited range, but she has enough character and ability to sell her material without fail. And there will never not be a need for a vocalist who doesn't handle each stage of a relationship as if her life depends on it

1.0 out of 5 stars Bad voice, August 13, 2006
This review is from: Cassie (Audio CD)
Her voice is bad, I heard her cd because my friend has it and she talks her way through every single song. It just goes to show you, you can have a pretty face and no voice and still be able to come out with a cd. I feel sorry for people who can actually sing and there not able to get a chance to go far. I could have sung that song Me & U and I seen her performance on Bet and I couldnt believe how horrible her voice was and she had the nerve to have back up singers to help her with the song.

1.0 out of 5 stars Overprocessed R&B pap!, August 8, 2006
This review is from: Cassie (Audio CD)
This is the very first album I've heard in 2006 that I will give a very low rating. All the others this year I've given 4s, 3s and 5s to, but I didn't like most of this album. Cassie lacks the excitement of other female artists out there now. Most of this album would be better sung by someone else. Rihanna or Christina Milian could sing these songs much better than Cassie. It's all overprocessed R&B pap! The first six songs sound so low budget to me, not very much creativity and the music sounds 2-3 years out of date. All keyboard heavy, but they wouldn't sound good in the clubs. And how her voice is Pro-tooled and overprocessed to the point where you don't hear her own singing voice at all. Only 3 songs I liked--the hit Me and U, Just One Nite and What Do U Want. The other 7 just don't pull me in. And I'm not including the interlude, just the full length songs only. Cassie has the potential to be great--does have some talent, but she needs to do far, far better than this uneven batch of songs--sounds like she's rapping more than singing on some numbers. The one star is most deserving--much of this will be forgettable one to 5 years from now!

3.0 out of 5 stars Goods Songs For A Mediocre Talent., August 11, 2006

(REAL NAME)
This review is from: Cassie (Audio CD)
Cassie--proof that all it takes is a pretty face to make it in the industry. Whether you are in love with her debut album or not, it doesn't take much to recognize that Cassie is no Beyonce. She strains to reach her high notes and as far as soul...she has none. Other reviews from this site have blasted her for her lack of talent deeming her incapable of singing, but I'm not so much convinced that is true. Producer Ryan Leslie seems to hold her back in a lot of the songs, forcing her to play it safe. To make up for power, he decides what's best is to continually overlay her voice during the bridge or chorus on every song in order to fill in for something she lacks. Rarely do you ever hear her vibrato. It's just a plain note after the next. Why do you think artists like Beyonce Knowles and Christina Aguilera are so popular? It's because they take the risk to hit that high key. They warble the notes. They feel the music. Not to say that Cassie will ever be able to sing like those soul sisters, but there is a difference between living the music and just signing the notes written by someone else. Below are my song critiques on a scale from 1 to 10:

_ _ _

Me & U - This track is by far the best song off of the album. Like her voice, the song is simple--simple notes, simple beats--and yet has so much substance to it. Unfortunately, `Me & U' is not indicative to rest of the album sound. (10)

Long Way 2 Go - The only reason why this song is good is because it takes the same formula devised in "Me & U" and applies it similarly to this song--the only real difference being Cassie's attempt at rapping which has as little life to it as her singing. Although harsh on my critique, I still like this song because it is really only one of a handful of songs that are memorable off of her debut. (9)

About Time - Nothing special, but nothing deplorable either. You see, it is a song like this that could be so much better if Cassie had applied some soul to her delicate voice. Instead, the song comes out sounding unenthusiastic and dull. (7)

Kiss Me - When I was looking at the booklet that accompanied the disc, I noticed that Destiny's Child (along with a slew of other writers) had come together to write this love song. Then, sure enough I also came to notice why they hadn't recorded it. It's formulaic, boring and soulless to say the least. (5)

Call U Out - With such a such strong and powerfully throbbing opening, I was expecting Cassie to do a little more with this song...She says she is the "illest chick you ever had" but quite honestly I don't believe her. All I'm asking for is a bit of soul! Is that so much to ask for in an R&B artist? (6)

Just One Night - Not that great of a song, bit at least it is one that suits her soft voice. If only it wasn't quite as monotonous, it would have been quite a nice song. I do give it props for incorporating a harp into the mix--it actually sounds nice with the rap laid over it. (6)

Hope You're Behaving (Interlude) - I never understood these interludes in R&B albums especially the ones with phone message recordings. It just gets me question why...? (0)

Now With You - The first slow jam that really and truly works. `Not With You' is a big improvement on `Just On Night' and is only one of a few songs that I get excited to listen to over and over again. It's the perfect song that compliments her soft voice. (9)

Ditto - It's good because it attempts to be a bit different from the other tunes on this album. Maybe having an echoing chorus doesn't make that much of a difference, but it gives the album a bit of character. Unfortunately, I still would have liked to have heard a bit more enthusiasm coming from Cassie's part. But by now, as the songs dwindle down to a mere few, I know it is more of a prayer than a request. (7.5)

What Do U Want - All I have to say to this one is that someone should have given it to Britney Spears before Cassie. Not that I'm endorsing Britney, but this song seems so out of place for her. A song that doesn't compliment her soft voice seems to always come out wrong. Unfortunately, that is 60% of this album. (5)

Miss Your Touch - This is a good song to end the album on. She actually semi-works it. I still can't imagine her feeling the music, but I have to lower my standards a bit to give Cassie the benefit of the doubt. (8)

Since when does carrying basic NOTES and having a pretty face qualify you to record an album??? These record labels are throwing scraps at you trying to make a buck! I hate to write such a low scoring bad review but really... the girl sucks... God forgive me, she sucks... No matter how awesome it is for her to have her dream come true and be a singer she should find another dream... Horrible, Just horrible. Whenever, I mean W-H-E-N-E-V-E-R the song "me and u" comes on I change the radio station - IMMEDIATELY... she has ZERO talent... I mean, zip zero nada... She CANNOT SING and ANYONE who says she CAN does NOT and I mean DOES NOT HAVE AN EAR FOR TALENT!!!!!!!!!! And anyone who says she can DANCE must have no rhythm to call their own... What happened to TALENT??? I mean... the kind of voice that makes the world just Stop... when did we start just letting pretty faces slide by with shallow voices??? This chick here - bottom line - is all about Presentation. You put a thin pretty girl on TV throw her a couple decent lyrics and watch her barely move and call her a Singer???? An Entertainer???? No. No. No. We should demand that record labels DO THEIR JOB!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! FIND TALENTED PEOPLE FOR US TO SPEND OUR MONEY ON. This is unacceptable. Her voice is very very VERY weak and is she produced by Diddy??? What in the heck was the man thinking... her ship is barely sailing and I'll appreciate greatly when it sinks cuz she stinks... Again, Forgive Me Forgive Me people... but I couldn't let this one ride and this is faaaaaaar beyond any "E for Effort"... she gets a N for NO and P for Please STOP... go be a model or something...
