Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 2-4–Even basic staples like flour are hard to come by in war-torn Mississippi, but resourceful young Cassie manages to find all the ingredients for a huckleberry pie. Just as she prepares to bake it, she learns that Yankee soldiers are on the way, and, in her mother's absence, she must protect her younger brother and sister and their home by herself. Thinking fast, she builds an unseasonably hot fire in the hearth, dapples her siblings' faces with dye from the berries, and bundles them and all the valuables into her mother's large bed. The ruse successfully frightens the soldiers, who flee the house empty-handed to avoid their outbreak of "measles." Winnick's engaging story is straightforward and easy to follow, and is serviceably accompanied by double-page, oil-on-canvas paintings. The art fleshes out the narrative, but is visually pretty monotonous overall. It lacks depth or detail, and looks unfinished and amateurish. An additional purchase.–Catherine Threadgill, Charleston County Public Library, SC

From Booklist

Gr. 1-3. Cassie is watching her younger brother and sister and making a huckleberry pie when a neighbor alerts her that Yankees are on their way! With Mama tending wounded soldiers at the hospital and Papa off with General Lee's army, she knows that she has to be brave and cunning. Using her precious berries, she stains red blotches on Saralyn and Willie's cheeks, piles more logs on the fire to make it hot enough to flush their faces, and hides their provisions under the bed. Her ruse fools all the soldiers except the youngest, but he plays along, pretending the children have measles. The canvas threads that show through Winnick's oil paints add to the homespun feeling of the pictures. At times, both text and art seem a little stilted, but the plucky heroine and the clever idea will make this glimpse of life during the Civil War of value in the classroom. Julie Cummins

5.0 out of 5 stars Saved by a Huckleberry, January 5, 2007

This review is from: Cassie's Sweet Berry Pie: A Civil War Story (Hardcover)
Kids left alone are raided by hungry Civil War soldiers but the eldest cleverly uses berry juice to make everyone look like they have a really wretched case of the measles. The ruse works, and the supplies and children are left alone. This one cries out for the readers to finish up by making their own sweet berry pie!

5.0 out of 5 stars The tale of a young girl during the American civil war, April 11, 2005
This review is from: Cassie's Sweet Berry Pie: A Civil War Story (Hardcover)
Author/illustrator Karen B. Winnick's original picturebook, Cassie's Sweet Berry Pie: A Civil War Story is the tale of a young girl during the American civil war. Her father is away fighting in the army, and her mother works in the hospital tending to wounded soldiers. When Union troops raid her house for supplies, she must come up with a clever ploy to protect her family's food store, proving that huckleberries can be used for more than sweet pies! The gentle color artwork perfectly complements this tale about resourcefulness - not to mention help from the most unlikely places.
