Cast the First Stone' begins with Mary of Magdala, a teenager, playing a game of stones with friends on the shores of the Sea of Galilee. She wins the game and a male competitor, furious for having lost the competition, pelts her with the stones used in the game. Years later, the same male rapes Mary, and when she refuses to marry him, she is disowned by her father.
She leaves home and heads for Jerusalem, where circumstances throw her into prostitution and she is possessed by evil spirits; she is cured by Jesus. At a gathering in the home of one of her friends, she is reunited with the companions of her youth. She is tricked by the host, who rapes her, but in the act is discovered by the other guests and is judged for the sin of adultery. She is taken out to be stoned. Once again, she is saved by Jesus, who challenges the accusers to cast the first stone if they are without sin.
