5.0 out of 5 stars Not your typical Dutch oven cookbook
I have a lot of Dutch oven cookbooks and what surprised me about this one is the variety of untypical recipes -curries, asian foods, italian dishes, lots of things that sound really adventurous. Glad I bought it. I recommend it highly!

1.0 out of 5 stars Big disappointment
I ordered this book based on the table of contents and on the description on Amazon. I've found every recipe I tried overly sweet and flat-tasting. I'll probably recycle this book next trip to Goodwill.

4.0 out of 5 stars Diverse Recipes, September 6, 2009
This review is from: The Cast Iron Chef: The Main Course. With a wide range of dishes, and help on how to cook dutch oven in your home, dutch oven cooking has never been easier. (Paperback)
As a long time devotee to camp cooking, I really appreciate this book. Dutch oven cooking, or one pot dinners are as staple an item on any camping trip as ghost stories around the fire. As much as camp fire dinners over the years have evolved into some of my best meals ever, I will admit that most cookbooks and recipes shared around the fire tend to be the same old soups and stews. This book does and excellent job in providing some diversity to the tried and true meat and potato dishes. The ones I have tried so far have been delicious indeed. And as far as cookbooks go, this one is very reasonably priced as well. My only reason for taking off a star is I really could have done without so much of the preliminaries at the beginning that are not exactly boring, but definitely in my opinion book filler. A short introduction and a few more recipes added instead of the history and conditioning of the dutch oven would have made it a five star book. Still however as cookbooks of this variety go, this is one of the best as well as diverse I have encountered. Recommended...

I purchased this book for my son to give to him with a cast iron Dutch Oven. There are a wide variety of recipes with simple, easy to follow instructions. Looking forward to enjoying one of these recipes from the Dutch Oven. My son was excited about the gift!

Everytime I cook one of Matt Peltons recipes out of this book the family enjoys them. His selections of spices and fruit juices to cook make the recipes a delight. I have many cookbooks and by far to many to count and my family very seldom eats the same recipe twice except for Matt Pelton's recipes. Tonight I'm fixing one of his recipes. Grandma's pot roast which is a browned chuck roast cooked in carmelized vidala onion and apple juice with a pinch of clove. I just added the potatoes and oriental cut carrots. My granddaughter is visiting us today and I wanted a warm comforting meal for her. If I was in a hunting camp I would bake a fresh loaf of French Bread to sop up the gravy.
I fixed a regular beef roast with his Coke Cola venison recipe. My good friend and food critique stopped by and sampled it. A week later he called me for the recipe. My regret is that I would very much like to see Matt Pelton write another cookbook.

These recipes are simple, with ingredients that are fairly on hand in your kitchen. I have tried several recipes, all just in my kitchen and not camping, but they have all been excellent. This a no frills, simple, easy to follow cookbook! Also, he offers great advice in the beginning section regarding care and use of your cast iron cookware.

The book was great for some one like me who does not know how to cook. Good company to deal with.
