Book Description

November 30, 2007
A compelling saga set in turn-of-the-century London - When their mother dies, young Ellie Jay and her sister Dora are abandoned by their hard-drinking father, and they cannot afford the rent on their East End tenement. Ellie cannot turn down an offer of help from Doctor Lowe, a kindly man who sees in Ellie a surrogate daughter. His kindness offers Ellie and Dora an opportunity to escape their background and, ultimately, to make something of themselves...

Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Living in impoverished East End London at the turn of the nineteenth century, 15-year-old Ellie Jay must care for her younger sister after their mother dies. Their cruel, womanizing father abandoned them, leaving Ellie full of rage and frightened about the future. When the doctor who refused to help her mother gives them money, Ellie confronts him. Pugnacious Ellie reminds Dr. Lowe of his deceased daughter, causing him to offer Ellie and her sister work in his home. Ellie soon has him paying for painting lessons as she dreams of becoming successful and making her father suffer for abandoning the family. Ellie's talents become the means for her to make a living when life at Dr. Lowe's becomes stifling. She sets out on her own, never losing sight of her quest to confront her father as she enters the burgeoning world of modern art. Lord paints a vivid picture of Edwardian life and the hardships facing unprotected women and children at the time. Engelmann, Patty
