The dream vacation that might just turn deadly...

Seventeen-year-old Casey Smith can't wait to embark on her summer vacation, not least because she's finally shed her tomboy image, and now heartthrob Mike seems interested. What starts out great, with lots of flirting, taking her a step closer to winning her crush's heart, soon turns into her worst nightmare.

Tossed out to sea during a freak storm, Casey is washed up on what she presumes to be a mysterious tropical island that's on no map she's ever seen.

About the Author

Chrissy Peebles, a practicing nurse, has always loved reading and writing fantasy from the earliest age she can remember. She plotted every single twist she could think of during bedtime stories for her children. When her little ones begged for more adventures, she felt confident enough to let her overeager imagination and sense of humor spill out into her first novel. She lives in Ohio with her husband, two young kids, one hamster, three dwarf hamsters and cat. When she's not taking the kids to Little League soccer, basketball, or baseball, she loves to snap photos as her favorite hobby.

4.0 out of 5 stars Young adults plunged into a mysterious world November 30, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
Wow, what a ride! Kind of a Gulliver's travels meets Jurassic park with all the teenage lingo to go along! Good story! I liked the fantasy aspect of the world with all the monsters and prehistoric creatures. Chrissy Peebles has created a sense of mystery that builds page to page of 'what the hell is this world?' The main characters are constantly trying to figure out where they are and the reader gets peeks into their thought processes, with a lot of gag lines to go along. By the time a mysterious human-like character gets on the scene things are really cooking. We are wondering, where is this guy from? Did they go back in time? Are they in the centre of the earth? Another planet? I must admit, there are a lot of twists I didn't see coming, which was refreshing.

The story consists of three teenage characters who complement each other, giving diverse personality and experience for a lot of dialogue which the author seems to have a knack for and fun with: Jack, handy with science and bit of a walking encyclopaedia Britannica; Mike, a high school star surfer/player/jaunty talker with women always on his mind; Casey, young, adventurous, head over heels with Mike, and equipped with an honesty, spunky heart, and a drive for 'doing the right thing'. The content has wide popular appeal, and with quick pacing and crisp dialogue and short narration makes the story hum along.

Casey is a fun character, and although she's in the throes of teenage heartache, she is still savvy. I chuckled at the following line:

Heat rose in Casey's cheeks. She couldn't believe she was acting like one of Mike's girls at the beach, falling for the same dumb crap they did.

3.0 out of 5 stars Great Plot, disjointed execution April 26, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
I'm a grownup, but I read a fair amount of YA Fiction as I used to be a YA Librarian and haven't shaken the habit.

That being said, I really enjoyed the plot of this book and the basic character set ups were decent, but the execution was just a little clumsy.

My main problem was with the multitude of pop-culture references and the timing of those references. The sheer amount of them slow down the action. The book really could have made all the same points and pop-culture connections with 50% of the references. It started to get annoying.

When running through an unimaginable jungle with *things* that are only a few feet away trying to kill you, are you truly going to take the time, even in your own mind, to make references to Tarzan AND Lara Croft within a few paragraphs of each other in what is supposed to be a fast paced action scene?

And I truly understand that teens are led by their hormones and will think about the opposite sex at the most inopportune times. That is not the issue. But when one of your best friends is stuck in a dark hole with water coming in, and you have no way of getting them out because of the giant (i won't spoil it for you) hovering over you, there is no teen I know that would be calling out snarky comments.

You just escaped from (not gonna tell you) and you are underground following (not gonna tell you) to try to find your lost (nope, not saying) from a pretty dangerous and time sensitive fate, but you take the time out to make out MULTIPLE times? A bit much even for a teen semi-romance. Scenes like this make the characters feel more shallow than they would have otherwise.

The world building is pretty good, some pretty imagery with butterflies, amongst other things, sounds awesome; and some imagery with ....

4.0 out of 5 stars Delightful surprise April 16, 2012
Format:Paperback|Verified Purchase
This is a delightful romp into what could be. Even though it was all explained eventually it was nice to explore a world of possibilities as the characters moved from reality to could it be true to that's impossible. I very much enjoyed the journey with them and was sad when it ended.

As an adult reader, however, I found the constant bickering between the boys became annoying beyond belief. As a teen reader, I would probably have found it cute. Peebles did an awesome job of portraying teens as they are at their most annoying and it defiantly brought out the mother in me in that I wanted to smack their heads together! I'm not sure, though, that I would change anything. Maybe tone it down a bit or let them grow up a little. After everything they go through I would think they would get some level of maturity. Maybe.

I very much enjoyed reading this book with its twists and turns, constant adventure and even the time I wanted to smack those boys for being so immature! This is a definite must read.

5.0 out of 5 stars Non Stop Adventure October 24, 2011
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
This book is a fabulous adventure that will appeal to both young and old. It's fun and witty with a great combination of action, humour, romance and science fiction. The characters leap off the page and pull you into their experience. The author uses her skill as a writer to bring a magical world to life on the page, creating adventures and challenges for Casey and her two best friends to enjoy and overcome. This book is like a modern day Famous Five with dinosaurs. The book finishes with a cliff hanger, perfectly setting readers up for the next instalment.

3.0 out of 5 stars Good book, but it ended too soon
Good book, but it ended too soon. Left everything up in the air way too much. It was more like a short story more than a book.

Although it was short and not the best, I enjoyed this novella and look forward to continuing the series. Peebles did an excellent job.

3.0 out of 5 stars It was ok
The story was interesting enough but I felt like there was a lot of filler with sappy romance or flirtatious filler without there being any actual romance in the novel. Read more
