Editorial Reviews

The art of Shakespeare was a recurring fascination for Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco. In addition to two operas and numerous settings of songs and sonnets, he wrote 11 Shakespeare Overtures which here
receive their first ever complete recording. Deploying all the resources of the symphony orchestra, these
are some of the twentieth century's most dramatic and tuneful orchestral works, spectacular evocations
of Shakespeare's greatest plays. Volume Two is available on Naxos 8.572501. Castelnuovo-Tedesco's
settings of Shakespeare songs can be heard on Marco Polo 8.223729.

Castelnuovo-Tedesco, who composed numerous film music for Hollywood, found it familiar territory to write for Shakespearean dramas. On this first volume of two covering 11 overtures, we hear six recorded in 1994 by the West Australian Symphony Orchestra, Perth, who give a solid and balanced performance. Not Korngold or Steiner cinematic as anticipated, these works are more like tone poems of Strauss or the British dramatic renderings of Walton and Holst. Indeed, for me, there is a British feel to the collection. This is heard in the fanfares and gravity of Julius Caesar, the frolicsome melodies of Taming of the Shrew, the epic flow of mood and majesty of Anthony and Cleopatra, the playful, shimmering dreaminess aptly of A Midsummers Night's Dream, the slow descent into tragedy in the third Roman play, Coriolanus, and the romantic, episodic, and ballet-like Twelfth Night, with its inclusion of folk tunes. The album provides the first recordings of these enjoyable pieces, and I look forward to Volume 2.

Mario Castelnuovo-Tedesco is presently best known for his works for guitar. Not because his guitar works are particularly good, but because there is a dearth of good classical music for guitar (no wonder given the limited range and coloristic capacity of the instrument) and apparently a huge demand for it. Apart from that Heifetz recorded his very compelling second violin concerto back in the days, and finally Naxos has provided us with the chance to hear his series of concert overtures to Shakespeare's plays written between 1930 and 1953. I am not going to claim that they are masterpieces, but they are consistently highly enjoyable and many of them sport some quite memorable themes. The style is neo-classically tempered romanticism, reminiscent of the Hollywood masters of the time (Rozsa, perhaps, but Castelnuovo-Tedesco is more thoroughly romantic).

Julius Caesar (1934) opens the show with a rousing fanfare and a strong main theme, even though I am not sure it really adds up to much. The Taming of the Shrew (1930) is brilliant, wittily tongue-in-cheek and thoroughly engaging. Antony and Cleopatra (1947) is the longest work here (nearly 18 minutes) and does indeed manage to realize a certain epic sweep in a Hollywoodesque fashion, even though I think it does, in the end, threaten to outstay its welcome (the slow middle theme is superb, however). A Midsummer Night's Dream (1940) is another highlight; there is a small gesture of homage to Mendelssohn at the beginning, but then ventures off in a quite delectable, impressionistically colored, atmospheric brand of romanticism; very attractive and well constructed.

The Tragedy of Coriolanus (1947) is (obviously) darker in character and manages to reach an impressive level of intensity.

I was not familiar with this composer and bought this disc after reading another reviewer's comments. You really can't go wrong at the Naxos price.
