Editorial Reviews

Acclaimed saxophonist Donny McCaslin takes a bold leap forward with his tenth album as a leader, Casting for Gravity. McCaslin's gargantuan tenor sound finds an ideal setting to rampage through in the ferocious grooves and electronic textures of keyboardist Jason Lindner, bassist Tim Lefebvre, and drummer Mark Guiliana. Couching his trademark gift for brawny melodies in lurching dub rhythms, swirling electronica-inspired atmospheres, and arena-rock power, McCaslin has crafted a game-changer of an album, fusing a wealth of forward-looking influences into one wholly new modern jazz sound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Album November 19, 2012
Format:Audio CD
I'm always looking for new sounds. If you take a similar approach to music, you will love this album. It's an eclectic mix of electronic music and jazz but done in a way not often approached. Generally most mixing of electronic and jazz has a sort of novel quality to it. Even the great work done by Herbie Hancock back in the 80s seemed to have a novelty to them. That is not to say that albums by other musicians (some, like Hancock are genius) mixing jazz and electronic music are bad but that there is a tendency to rely a little on an attitude of "wow look at the weird ways we can make noises into music now." This album completely eschews that approach. Instead you are given an album that mixes a softer sax tone with more thrashing or ambient sounds depending on the track. Imagine an album where Michael Brecker mixes with Aphex Twin or Boards of Canada (a cover of BOC's Alpha and Omega appears on the album) with a dash of the avant thrown in and you come close to understanding this album. Brilliant work and highly recommend it. I'd also recommend seeing the group live (I did last week and it was amazing) if you haven't already.

5.0 out of 5 stars Incredible album October 24, 2013
By Evan

Fantastic modern jazz, with great playing by the whole band. Mark Guiliana in particular is phenomenal on the drums. A revolutionary and innovative player, with fantastic groove and unpredictable, explosive fills. Can't recommend this album enough!

5.0 out of 5 stars Great Gift! January 11, 2013

I gave this CD to my son for Christmas. He is a jazz scholar and musician and greatly respects Donny McCaslin as a performer and as a person.
