An adventure with mysterious feel, need very careful play,
By Tsang Lok Ming (Hong Kong) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Castle Amber (Chateau d' Amberville) (Dungeons & Dragons Module X2) (Paperback)
Though main part of the module are indoor adventure, it doesn't mean easier to play. Indeed, it is rather difficult. You need a careful play, make a lot of saving throw, and a smart conversation when encounter with NPC. It is not strange that one or more PCs died during the adventure. Don't be disappointed. If the party can finish the adventure eventually, you may gain a lot of reward, included the dead PCs can return to life.Remind you again, each mindless fighting would ruin your party in any encounter, since you would face powerful magic. Ignoring those traps can also kill your PCs. Play it carefully. Enjoy this challenge!

Fascinating!,

X2: Castle Amber (Chateau d'Amberville) is a D&D (1st edition-Expert Set) module for six to ten characters of level three to six (totaling about 30 experience levels). In this module, the characters find themselves transported by a magical fog to a castle existing in an entirely different plane of existence. The castle is the home of a powerful, though insane, family, and also their trap. To end the castle's haunted existence, and to free themselves, the players must find the crypt of the foully murdered Stephen Amber. This module is the sequel of X1: The Isle of Dread, and is quite obviously the inspiration for the module (and subsequent campaign) Ravenloft. It is based on the stories of Clark Ashton Smith. Though short, it is quite fascinating, coming with 15 new monsters. As a Dungeon Master I was a little disappointed with the traps that end with, "if saving throw failed, then the character dies," of which there are several in this module. That said, though, it is fascinatingly different module, one that you should get.

Lovecraft meets AD&D! Here, author Tom Moldvay secured an impressive license - Lovecraft devotee & accomplice Clark Ashton Smith, and his dark, French-inspired faerie shadowland of Averoigne. The heroes (levels 3-6) are plunged into the Tomb of Stephen Amber, and the dreamworld beyond, where they will quickly learn that magic is illegal, the nobility are insane, the PCs themselves are manipulated pawns, and beautiful maidens with unicorns aren't ever what they seem... a maliciously ingenious adventure, and highly recommended.

Castle Amber (1981) is the sequel to The Isle Of Dread from the AD&D Expert Set. The Isle Of Dread was the module that was included in the Expert Set back in 1981. Castle Amber is for character levels 3-6. In this module, characters will explore the haunted Amber family castle. The goal is to break a curse that Stephen Amber, a wizard, had put on his insane relatives. This was in retaliation for his relatives murdering him. The ultimate goal is to find Stephen Amber's tomb and lift the curse. You'll encounter lots of danger along the way. It's a cool dungeon to explore. I highly recommend this great module. |
