Tender and Engaging Love Story!, September 18, 2009
This review is from: A Castle of Dreams (The Barbara Cartland Pink Collection) (Paperback)
The Pink Collection books are proof that Barbara Cartland's gift for creating poignant romances never failed her nor us, her readers. Published for the first time in August 2009, A Castle of Dreams is a delight! The tale: When an impoverished duke meets the richly-dressed daughter of an earl, their attraction to each other is instantaneous. Their burgeoning feelings are well-developed in the characters' revealing and soulful introspection, a hallmark of Cartland's writing. Her characters think, and we are privy to the unspoken longings of their hearts.
However, misunderstandings quickly ensue when the Duke and Viola each mistakes the other's intention. Hearing of his need for a rich heiress, Viola believes that Robert's interest in her is purely pecuniary. She realizes that her borrowed finery make her look like something she's not--a rich heiress. Hence Robert's interest in her. In truth, she has no money at all. She determines to hide her disappointment and her attraction to him by flirting with others. He in turn observes her frivolous behavior and, with dismay, decides that she is shallow. Indeed, too shallow to be able to love him.
Months later, Duke Robert and Viola meet again when the ship carrying Viola and her twin brother, David, back to England from America wrecks near the Duke's property. Viola and her brother, accept the Duke's offer to stay at his castle during David's recovery. As Viola and Robert begin to mend their relationship and more, David and the Duke's sister, Meg, fall in love.
Unbeknownst to Robert and his sister, Viola and David have just inherited a fortune from their father. At Viola's insistence, David keeps their good fortune secret. Viola waits for the "right time" to tell Robert of her changed circumstance. Meanwhile, events conspire that make Viola's secret a deception that Robert might never forgive.
A Castle of Dreams is a fast-moving traditional romance with compelling conflicts and richly developed characters. Any reader of romance will want to read this story. Any fan of Barbara Cartland will have to. Enjoy, as I have, reading a new Cartland romance novel!
