I took a chance on this movie as I have never seen it but I like John Garfield and I must say, I was pleasantly surprised. I am very surprised as I really fell in love with Ann Sheridan, she really shined in this movie and I thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry the actors had together. A great movie with a great plot and great performances by all.

Burgess. Do you need to hear more! His beauty, his softness, You know you want it. You know you need it. Only four senses, but it's worth it!

Tommy Gordon(John Garfield)a hoodlum,is convicted of robbery and sent to Sing Sing.Tommy sneers at it all.The only person Tommy has any use for is Kay Manners(Ann Sheridan)who wishes Tommy would quit the rackets.
Tommy believes Fridays are unlucky for him.
Tommy meets the warden Walter Long(Pat OBrien)whos tough but honest.
Tommy also meets up with one of the cons Steve Rockford(Burgess Meredith)who along with another con(Guinn Big Boy Williams)are planning an escape. On the night of the escape Tommy remembers its Friday and refuses to go along. The escape is a failure and Steve is killed.
Tommys lawyer,Ed Crowley(Jerome Cowan)has little use for him and his only interest is Kay.After Kay is badly hurt in a car accident defending herself from Ed word gets to Walter. The warden gives Tommy a parole with the agreement he return after he visits Kay.
Will Tommy keep his word?Watch it and see.
This was a remake of 200,000 Years In Sing Sing with Spencer Tracy and Bette Davis.
Question,Why was Jerome Cowan one of the most hated actors in Hollywood.Answer,He prosecuted Santa Claus in Miracle On 34TH Street.
Also at the end of High Sierra he sneered at Bogarts dead body and said,BIG SHOT,EARL.WELL,WELL,HE AINT MUCH NOW,IS HE?
