The Kay Dixie illustrations are what make this book worth its price - they are detailed and beautifully colored. The "story" in the book uses the voice of a youth, child of the Constable, who lives in the castle and tells the story of its method of construction, and events which happen there. The pages contain many flaps to lift for more information, and some nice pop-up pages and slide tabs. There is a plethora of information about castles to be found here, and it makes a nice addition to a collection of engineered books.

Very cool book and a great way to present the information. I was impressed by the pop-up style... haven't seen that in any books since I was a child. The one-star review left by someone else is bogus: this book is NOT meant for toddlers or pre-schoolers. For a nine to 12 year old, the info is entirely age-appropriate.

The pop-ups in this book do not work properly. The information is fine yet very sketchy. The advertisements for this book were misleding.

Warning!! Not for Children!,

This book, by all outward appearances is lovely. And, I will admit it is quite informative. But, sit your toddler on your lap to look at the "pop up" book, and the story becomes disturbing and too realistic for a small child.People starving? No food, so they had to eat rats? Corpses stinking? Killing horses for food? People digging tunnels to set the castle walls on fire? This is a fairly realistic depiction of what feudal warfare was like. Adults could learn alot from it, but a children's book it is NOT. |
