Castles (First Discovery Books), March 28, 2011
This review is from: Castles (First Discovery Books) (Hardcover)
ISBN
0590463772 - Printed in Italy. Age range not stated. Right in the middle of a pile of Easter books, there was Castles. Since it seemed like a good time to take a break, I read it, not expecting a lot. Books about castles are pretty common, especially those aimed at young children. I was pleasantly surprised, although I'm not at all sure that this is a book for very young kids.
On plastic and plastic-coated pages, information about castles is shared in simple language. From the layout of a castle to the details of living in a keep, from feasts to jousting, a large amount of information is included.
The English translation by Jennifer Riggs and written by Nancy Krulik, is simple and straightforward but the info seems a little too much for kids under 7 or so and might even be suitable for slightly older kids who need non-fiction sources. The only complaint I have is that the font of the text goes from one size to another, over and over, making it very easy to overlook certain sentences that are written very small. Illustrations by C&D Millet are full of fascinating details and the painted plastic pages that overlay the text pages hide surprises that are both fun and informative. There's an entire series of First Discovery Books, including
Egg (First Discovery),
The Seashore (First Discovery Series) and more. Once you've discovered these, it's hard to not want more of them!
