A huge very colorful book of castles and palaces.Includes sites from all over Europe. Most of the castles featured are newer fancier types, not many old ruins in here.Gorgeous photography with inside pictures as well.Quite a bit of information on each palace is also included. If you like German castles you will love this book.

Hochosterwitz Castle near Klagenfurt Austria is Awesome!!!,

I did not know that it was one of the oldest and largest castles in Europe. I did not know that it was one of the very few unconquered castles. I was taught, on location.I flew in to Klagenfurt from NYC for a summer DJ job. After they explained upon my arrival that the cost of my Lufthansa Business class ticket and my room and board was coming out of my pay, I decided the job wasn't for me that first night. A tall soft-spoken guy offered me a ride to his car dealership in Munich, at dawn. I escaped wearing the red dress in which I spun the music, after my shift. The guy insisted that we see this castle on the way out. We were alone at dawn, eating chips, drinking great beer, on the chapel steps of this magnificent castle, atop a super-steep mountain..... Breathtaking. He was the kindest gentleman, and I was so happy. It's too steep to frolic in the meadow and have a "sound of music" moment; you'll plummet to your death . But he gave me the history of how they were never conquered (for example by Mongols and Tartars) is because they installed an elevator-type shaft in the middle of the mountain castle to lower people down to the bottom to a tunnel that lead to the forest side, when under attack during times of war. These people collected food to sustain the castle inhabitants. How cool is that? We stopped in Vienna to dine, and it was excellent, but Hochosterwitz Castle stayed fresh in my mind. I plan to revisit this place one day, I dream about it often. FYI: If you're ever in Grenoble, France - stop by the Postman's Castle. Built on the alp solely by a man with a vision. It made my head spin when I first saw it, during a 1 month stay in Grenoblr; truly amazing. It looks as though it came straight out of Thailand or Vietnam. Some parts of The Alps of Europe are so much like the Colorado Rockies, or any "unfracked" (mountaintops blown up for oil) Appalachian strip, minus the cool killer castles. |
