Book Description

December 1, 2001
Venetia Marriott arrives in Southern Spain to stay with an uncle and aunt in their rural hideaway in Rosario, near Seville. She is recovering from the tragic death of a French boyfriend, and looking for rest and relaxation. Instead she is catapulted into the local affairs of a small village and its inhabitants, notably the Quinones family and their two sons: the handsome womaniser, Fernando, and the gentler Felipe. When an old schoolfriend, the beautiful Fiona, also turns up in Rosario on the trail of a reclusive uncle, the bestselling novelist lan Gilmour, the two girls are drawn into a web of romantic entanglements - as well as a bitter family feud which harks back to Spain's Civil War.

From Booklist

On her way to Spain to escape memories of her boyfriend, who died of leukemia, Venetia Marriott encounters Fiona Gilmour, an old friend (and foe) from her college days. Venetia goes to stay with family in Rosario, Spain, where she meets the seemingly kind-hearted Felipe Quinones and his dashing brother, Fernando. Venetia also meets Ian Gilmour, who happens to be Fiona's estranged uncle. A complicated love-triangle develops when Fiona arrives. Felipe and Fiona become an item, and Venetia is drawn to Ian, who, like her, is coping with loss. After Fiona leaves, Felipe and Venetia attempt to reconstruct their relationship, but when the Quinones purchase a castle, a battle with the Marriotts ensues, threatening the future of Rosario and the relationship between Venetia and Felipe. Venetia ultimately learns that she must choose her own path in life, and in doing so she realizes who she truly loves. Stewart's beautifully written tale is a marvelous and heartwarming story full of passion, politics, and promise. Megan Kalan
