Better for the graphics than for the coloring,
By Donn Nieder (Tallahassee, FL USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Castles of the World Coloring Book (Dover History Coloring Book) (Paperback)
If you're looking for a great coloring book, this isn't the best choice since the detailed drawings are rather hard to color. But if you have a need for great pictures of castles to use in publications, this books is for you. There are 31 black-and-white illustrations with 15 two page spreads, including the centerfold which details all the parts of a circa 1200 Norman castle. All four cover pages have color pictures. Each picture is of an actual castle and the captions on each page give a little information about the castle including when it was constructed. Castles from England, France, Italy, Spain, Portual, Germany, and Japan are included.

I bought this for my 10 year old artist, a little hesitant based on the reviews that I had read, but knowing that my son is in love with castles, so perhaps it would still be a hit. I was pleasantly surprised that the images are wonderful, full of areas for color and for the interpretation of color (we hate coloring books that insist on black spaces), and the castles were majestic! If you love castles, this book is a winner and sure to be satisfying!!

A.G. Smith's Castles of the World Coloring book is a brief but fun trip back into the pomp and power of the middle ages. Inside you will find laid out over forty pages a wonderful assortment of: English, German, French and other castles in all their majesty and drawn up in a detailed, accurate and breath-taking fashion that one cannot help themselves but to enjoy. Simply beautiful to look at.The book provides the reader with a detailed image of a castle and its surroundings, and then a small foot note of information at the bottom of the page, it provides a fun source of entertainment to look over and enjoy the illustrations whether you choose to attempt to color within the detailed lines or not. While some have chosen to color their pictures and/or display them, I myself have not, and prefer to keep the book intact and uncolored for future glances that make me smile. What one can do is photocopy the images for coloring so as not to ruin the integrity of the book. In all a fun book that children will enjoy and at such a low price with great artwork adults can appreciate.

The Dover Coloring books are all excellent! They are also an awesome value! We own and use over 20 of these coloring books for history and science. They are extremely detailed and educational, but even my 6 year old loves to color them!

Pretty Boring Choices,

When I bought this, I bought it with some other items, such as stickers and paper dolls, and thought that this Castle Coloring Book would include pictures of damsels and kings and events that go on within a castle. I was certainly wrong. What is is, is a coloring book of castle after castle, after castle. There are some that are representative of your usual castle and there are some pages of famous castles. But there is no break up in subject matter. Castles sitting on green grass, castles by motes, castles on mountains. That is what there is. Get out your grey, white, and black crayons, and get lots of extras, to color your castles. Get out the green for all the grass you will be coloring. Get out some more dull colors to do lots of rocks. This just is NOT exciting. It surely is Not a "girl item." We would clean up those castles and paint them in some nice, soft, eye pleasing colors that supplement all the grass and rocks. Little boys might like the unchanging scenaraios, but not us girls. I had gotten this, the paper dolls, stickers etc to go to a girl, but it is going back instead. Hope you can put it to a better use, but I cannot! So back it goes!!!!
