5.0 out of 5 stars A Castlevania Best!, September 24, 2010
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness for [Nintendo 64] (Video Game)
I think it a bit sad that a gem such as this game has gone under the radar or even dare I say hailed as not a true Castlevania game. However this is quite possibly the best 3D Castlevania ever made and pays more that its fair share of homage to the originals.
In a neat twist you actually play as a werewolf, Cornell, searching for his captive sister. Cornell is unique in the fact that you can transform into a wolf at any point, so long as you have jewel to activate the transformation. This gives you an edge in some of te boss battles or if you fall from a great height it can save you a game over. The trick is not abusing it. If you use it in the wrong situations you may be sorry when you run across a particularly challenging area or boss.
The graphics are great and with time always moving it can quickly go from day to night changing the, type of, enemies you will run across. Not only does time change but the weather as well. There are great effects of fog, rain and sun coming through windows. Some classics enemies make an appearence as well including the stain glass warriors, zombies and cerberus. There is a particularly nerve racking point where you must escape a chainsaw armed frankenstein through a hedge maze. Oh and by the way he doesn't die.
The level designs are not linear per say. As certain levels require quite a bit of puzzle solving in them selves but once you leave an area you won't be coming back. Like I said though some levels require quite a bit more than hacking through enemies in order to progress.
Now the controls are what I hear most people cry about and yes they are... difficult. But they are not impossible and once you learn how to negotiate the camera from fighting to action the controls are a breeze. The fighting is not terribly difficult and the sub weapons can be upgraded up to 3 levels to devestating effects and can help you out untill you get the melee mechanics down.
This game offers more than the first release as you get 4 different players to play with. Even though you will revisit pretty much the same areas the stories intertwine nicely. There are different characters and events that happen in similar areas depending on your character as well making those similar levels not too daunting or repetitive.
In conclusion this is one of my favorite Castlevania games and has a ton of replay value and nastalgic elements that made the originals great. If you are a fan of the series then this is a must have for your collection. A truly epic and original game with a lot of extra and great new hero's to keep you coming back.

4.0 out of 5 stars an underrated gem, January 7, 2011
= Fun:5.0 out of 5 stars
This review is from: Castlevania: Legacy of Darkness for [Nintendo 64] (Video Game)
I have to say I've read alot of reviews about this game and alot of revews don't give this game enough credit where it is due.But being overlooked doesn't mean it's a bad game,in fact quite the opposite.
LOD was the first Castelvania I ever played/bought in 2002 and have been playing it ever since.I have played other older Castlevanias on SNES and got into SOTN on PSX as well....all of them great games. But this one has PLENTY of replayablility.
Reasons for replay value:
1)You get to play as not 1 but 4 characters.Cornell-a man-beast that transforms into a werewolf,Henry-a man in armor who rescue chilren in the castle,Reinhardt Shnieder-a descendant of the Belmont Clan destined to stop Dracula with the Vampire Killer Whip, and Carrie Fernandez-a young girl with the ability to summon powerful orbs.
2)Reinhardt and Carrie have multiple endings depending on how long you played as them.I don't know the full extent of how the endings work except for the true endings you have to reach the last level Castle Keep within 7 days gameplay wise(not real-time mind you).
3)It's better than its predecessor Castlevania 64.Anyone who's played it knows what I'm talking about. The graphics have improved for Reinhardt and Carrie and you can controll them more smoothly this time around. Also you can unlock alternate costumes for them as well as Cornell.
If you are looking for a challenging Castlevania this is it.At times you could get lost if you haven't played this or 64 before(especially in the Villa lol). Also the puzzles are complicated but not impossible like jumping on the right pillar, when to pull the right lever, etc.
I hope my review gave you some helpful insights and has piqued your interest in this game. All in all 8 out of 10 in my book

Great game, a lot of fun. Tons of things to collect and levels to explore. Multiple characters to choose from. (Once unlocking them). This was a must have for me. If you love the series or more grown up platformers with darker enemies get this thing.
