Gabriel Belmont is a member of the Brotherhood of Light, an elite group of holy knights who protect and defend the innocent against the supernatural. His beloved wife was brutally murdered by the evil forces of darkness and her soul trapped for eternity. Neither living nor dead she realizes the horrific truth of what is at stake and guides Gabriel to his destiny – and hopefully salvation for the world.

Gameplay

Although based on the classic arcade side-scrolling platformer and the string of games that have followed over the years, Castlevania: Lords of Shadow is a modern single player Action-Adventure game played from the third-person perspective. Based around the tragic past and seemingly inescapable destiny of the Gabriel Belmont character, the player engages in a mix of combat, platforming and puzzle-solving skills. To deal with the hell-spawned beasties and bosses encountered, Gabriel uses a mix of upgradable weaponry and magical powers. Weapons range from a cross that can be extended into a whip with grapple capabilities, to a gauntlet, knives and more. As players wield these they will gain access to energy orbs that reveal themselves as enemies are dispatched. This energy is stored in on-screen gauges and powers multiple kinds of usable magic within the game. Some of its uses involved improve attacks, while the other aids reflect regenerative health. It is the players choice to juggle where these energies are applied. The availability of energy can also be increased by avoiding the attacks of enemies as you battle them, with the payoff coming when they are bested.

In addition to run of the mill bad guys, the game contains loads of huge bosses, success against which requires patience, attention to screen prompts and timing. The player will also come up against many other creatures that although vulnerable to weapons can also be defeated and tamed by Gabriel. In many cases these can then be used as mounts and used either in boss battles or in puzzle-solving scenarios that may not be able to be solved without them. These potential mounts include wargs, spiders, warthogs and more. Taken together, all of these elements make for an entirely new take on the Castlevania gaming experience that is destined to satisfy new and current fans alike.

Let me first write about the limited edition and why I would suggest just saving yourself 20 dollars and picking up the regular edition.

I had ordered the Limited Edition mainly for the Art Book. If you look at the mock up image of the limited edition on this page, it appears that the art book is an actual book. Sadly this is not the case. The art book, which is sadly composed of screenshot renders of images you can easily find online, is actually a part of the game case. Had the mock up mentioned this anywhere I might have avoided getting the limited edition (maybe that's why it isn't mentioned?). Hopefully someone from Konami or Amazon will take notice of this and fix this error.
Overall the Limited Edition isn't horrible, the game case looks nicer than the regular edition and the soundtrack is great to listen to, but these extras alone combined with the disappointing art book cannot justify the extra $20 price.

As for the actual game itself:

If you're a fan of God of War style games, and a fan of the horror genre you'll more than likely get a kick out of Castlevania: Lords of Shadow. I don't have a lot of previous experience with the Castlevania series, (I've only just made it to the upside down castle in Symphony of the night) so I can't say if fans of the Castlevania series will end up pleasantly surprised or sadly disappointed by this more westernized and linear reboot.

The gameplay comparisons between this game and God of War and Shadow of the Colossus are undeniable , but the story, setting, characters and enemies really give the game a voice of its own.
With the game lasting around 15-20 hours it runs pretty long, but rarely feels dull due to the excellent pacing and frequent boss battles.

I am a lifelong Castlevania fan and although I totally agree that this game is by no means similar to any Castlevania games of the past, I ask - is this really a bad thing? The franchise was in dire need of heading in a new direction and this game represents an amazing start. Let's face it, Castlevania over the past 10 years since Symphony of the night has become more and more formulaic. Sure there is a glyph system here and a touch screen system here, but it is the same old enter a castle, try to find everything, kill everything, unlock the map, defeat dracula game that we all know.

This game was an awesome experience, with A-list voice talent, razor sharp gameplay, and incredible graphics. It has a distinct feel of Castlevania in the sense that you have a whip, you are a Belmont, and you are killing hordes of the undead - but the similarities stop there. I am really tired of people hating on this game simply because it doesn't have the rock soundtrack and rehashed tunes of previous games- I totally love the fact that the team behind this had the guts to go against what they thought the public may want and just make a killer game that can redefine what Castlevania is today.

This game felt like a journey. Instead of taking place in one big castle, we are taken to small villages, swamps, different castles, forests, etc. I couldn't wait to see what was in store next... and if you hear anybody talking ill of the ending, just don't listen to them, please. The ending is amazing.

These reviews saying this is a rip off of God of War are so wrong. God of War came out far later than the Castlevania series. Other games in the past such as Rygar were already doing whip style attacks before God of War so we could fairly say GoW stole from Rygar if we wanted.
I don't own this but just happened to see it on the table at a friends place. I'm a grown man. I don't normally ask to play someone's xbox but I said, "I was curious if that game was any good. Can I play some?". He popped it in and let me play some of his game in progress.
I really liked this game. The graphics, the game physics, the storyline, the voice acting and more were very well done.
Some people complained about the timed "press X now" fight style/counters but the time to press the required button are not .5 seconds. They give you time to think and from what I played, if you miss it, you will get another chance.
Voice acting: Well done on all levels but... Sometimes, yes, they seem to ramble on with too much story plot and you might say, "Get on with it!" but you can skip them if you want.
Although I didn't play nearly the whole game, I will be picking it up thanks to my friend letting play some of his campaign.

I have been a castlevania fan from the beginning, i even enjoyed some of those less popular games on the ps2. to date, as most, my favorite game of the all of the vanias has been symphony of the night. that game was unique and fantastic, after having played this game and several of the DLCs after, i think that SotN has been replaced as my favorite by this one. The graphics are amazing, the gameplay feels familiar yet different, the story is addicting and consuming, i couldnt wait to see what happened next, and the ending is jaw dropping. i cannot wait for a sequel and lately this is one of the best 360 games i have played. it varies from the others in this genre alot, but partly due to technology being alot better now and 2 the story sort of explains part of the reason why in the end (sorry cant spoil that part, just watch the epilogue). All in all, everyone i have gotten to play this game is impatiently awaiting a sequel, and agree that it is one of the best games theyve played in a while.
