Editorial Reviews

Dessa's first full-length record, A Badly Broken Code, introduced her to a national audience as a rapper, a singer, and a potent, imaginative lyricist. It earned a binder of superlative reviews from sources like NPR, The Seattle Times, and AM New York. To tour the album, she assembled a small cast of talented instrumentalists: vibraphone, piano, viola, and stand-up bass for a classical, sometimes orchestral sound, a beautiful, somber effect re-interpreting the disc for a dynamic live concert. Part rap show and part cabaret, the elegant presentation charmed both audiences and critics - not a negligible feat in hip hop, a genre with its share of purists. Castor, The Twin captures these new arrangements for ten of Dessa's strongest previously released songs. It also includes The Beekeeper, the haunting advance single from Dessa's new album due in 2012.

I was doubtful that an album consisting mostly of new versions of songs from Dessa's previous 2 records would be worth buying, but after hearing it, it's amazing! These were recorded with the musicians who had been backing her on the Badly Broken Code tour, and as a result it doesn't sound much like a hip hop record, and I mean that in a good way. Amazon's classifying it as opera among other things, which I think is strange, really it resembles the jazz recordings of Patricia Barber as much as anything, or maybe not so much the recordings as sitting next to the stage for a live set Monday nights at the Green Mill in Chicago. It has that kind of improvisational feel to it. The live musicians let the songs breathe a little bit more, allowing them to change up the tempo a bit here and there for emotional effect, which is much harder to do with a backing track assembled from samples. The new arrangements throw the focus more on her songwriting, giving the songs new emotional weight and impact. I was amazed that I could be so affected by them considering that I listened to the last one just about every day last summer. Not only is this a great album, it makes the previous one better by giving the listener a new perspective on these songs, especially "Dixon's Girl" which wasn't really my favorite track on Code but is a fantastic song as re-interpreted here. Definitely worth it even if you think you have these songs already.

Dessa is amazing. This is the best album of re-done songs I have heard. Love every track. I highly recommend her other two albums as well.

I purchased my first Dessa album when it was listed at $5.00 on the Amazon deals. This subsequently lead to me purchasing her other two albums at full price because, well, she deserves it. Dessa does not receive playing time on the radio where I live so without Amazon I never would have stumbled into her.

I don't know how to compare her to other singers to help you make your decision. I'm grasping at how to describe her music and I'll just leave it at listen to samples from some of her albums if you are curious and you'll become enchanted with her music, lyrics, and voice. This is not pop/rock or some other upbeat fizz for your ears, but a little more meaty sound. She's educated and this shows in her music and spoken word. The tone of her music is deep and heavy and I would listen to her with Lana Del Rey, Adele, and singers that have a sound that isn't whimsical or frivolous.

Look, she's smart, beautiful, and has a voice that makes me delirious. Throw your money at her so she makes more music.

This is the CD for fans of A Badly Broken Code [Explicit] or False Hopes [Explicit] having a quiet day. Dessa revisits many of her previous work using acoustic instrumentation. The result is that it is easier to discern her poetic lyrics, which is her greatest strength, and a plus if you are the sort of rap fan who savors a good metaphor. This one is much more sing-songy than speedy, aggressive rap, so if you are into pounding beats, it won't be for you. Think of it like a rap album you'd give to your discerning Grandmother. Sometimes the instrumentation seems a touch too skeletal, and some songs (such as "Crow") are best appreciated with prior knowledge of their previous versions. Others, such as "Palace" stand on their own quite comfortably.

The instrumentation of this album is similar to her solo live shows, so if you dig that, you'll love this.

First off, you need to be aware that this is a collection of live studio recordings with Dessa and a band. I thought this was a greatest hits type CD, but its not. These are reimaginings of the original songs.

Unfortunately, Dessa is not very good at the slow songs on this CD. Although she's not a bad singer, she's not a great one either. She cannot carry the slower songs on this CD, and those songs actually felt unpleasant to my senses when she would drag notes out.

Fortunately, the faster songs sound fine. However, I only liked two or three songs on this CD, more than the originals. It's really not worth getting this CD unless you need to complete your Dessa collection, I think.

If you're new to her music, go get Badly Broken Code. That album rocks my socks.

I heard Dessa for the first time on Sound Opinions podcast and loved what i heard. the albums are even better. this one is new versions of previous song set to more instrumental tracks and less sampling (A badly broken code is a amazing). Great lyrics and messages. she is inviting, poetic and open. she is a great addition to the world of music and especially for hip hop. her positive outlook is a great alternative to the nikki minajs of the music scene.

i am truly loving this album and will by more of her stuff as well as her Doomtree label mates/collective members because they are fresh, new, and exciting.

I will start by saying that I'm not a fan of most rap. I like some old hip hop and early Gansta but that's about it. Dessa, however, really puts it all out there. She raps intelligently with rhyme schemes, or not, that are unique. She also adds in her soulful singing and expressive spoken word to round out this collection of songs. The only reason I gave it four stars and not five is that there are a few songs on here that were on A Badly Broken Code. Also, check out Doomtree, a collective with Dessa, P.O.S., and several others. They are also quite good.
