Catherine Russell has the all too rare ability to cut across a variety of song styles in a single recording and make them all sound cohesive, organic, smart and full of connected feelings. This disc has echos of everything from gospel to jump to blues and back through Bob Wills for good measure, yet it all makes sense. To my ears its her Sam cooke allusions that work most transcendently: "Put Me Down Easy" is pure pleasure and simple moving artistry. A great talent finally stepping out front.

A wonderful album. There is a great variety of styles on this album, and Catherine Russell shines at every moment. The mood varies as well, and Ms. Russell is equally adept at singing torch songs, the blues, and funnier numbers - don't miss "My Man's An Undertaker, and He's Got A Coffin Just Your Size".

Get this album - you won't be disappointed.

I saw Catherine Russell at the Lotus Festival in Bloomington and immediately came home and purchased the CD at Amazon. Loved the performance and love the CD. She can do it all. Jazz, Blues, Folk, Pop. Her cover of Put Me Down Easy is the best!

A great singer who does a ll styles, but is best at capturing old style blues, tho she is good at standards too.
She seems to be drawn to old time songs in the style of Bessie Smith and her generation of early blues recordings

Cat is a marvel. She comes from a line of musicians emanating from Panama down through turn-of-the-century New Orleans. She's old world recorded using new world technology. The sound is startlingly familiar, but hauntingly unique; one expects all sorts of scratchy pops and clicks while listening (the artifacts of a 78rpm record), but one gets clear and precise slur and jive in expert rendition of old favorites. Her back up band fits her style, too.

Catherine Russell sings and swings effortlessly with a truly beautiful timbre. Her versatility and range of voice and style is astonishing. She has paid her dues supporting other performers: watch her take her place with the best.

Oh, I love it when I hear a unique voice. Especially a fine voice like this one. Eclectic barrelhouse Blues belter that I can't wait to see live. If you like Blues or voices, snatch this album now.
