Les Savy Fav plays some great post-rock anthemic tunes. Their album 3/5 was pretty good, but this is downright INCREDIBLE. Self-Starter Foundation and Frenchkiss Records have such a wonky-rawk gem on their hands that I really can't imagine LSV improving on this (though lets hope they do). I hesitate to draw comparisons with other bands, but I'm reminded of Darling Little Jackhammer (for the chaotic-rock stylings), Panel Donor (for the equally composed- and calculating-rock stylings) and a smidge of Fugazi (just because). Noisy mid-western indie-rock fans can't go wrong with Les Savy Fav, and The Cat and The Cobra is easily the best place to start. If you dig this (and you should) you can move on to 3/5, which stands as a pretty endearing record on its own.

but it does have soul,

In response to the review that gave it 3 stars: his point that enough noise is confused with soul doesn't make sense. Listening to Tim's lyrics as well as the musicianship, I hear inventive, very soulful music. Regardless of genre distinctions and complex analysis of the scene's context, this is a moving album.

This record is amazing. i would describe it as art-punk that is not too arty and not too punky. it has such LSF classics as We've got boxes, Who rocks the party, and Wake up! but my personal favorite(and the best song on the album)is 'the end.' it stands out because of its jazzy time signature. the best part of the album is when tim sings "call me when you wanna call me" les savy fav have one coolest sounds i've ever heard. if your bored with current music scene(and you should be) look no further than les savy fav. check out liars too they're another awesome NYC band. OH yeah, if you haven't seen LSF Live you must see it. they put on the best live show i've ever seen. Plus tim is completly out of his mind.
