5.0 out of 5 stars Rawr.
Les Savy Fav plays some great post-rock anthemic tunes. Their album 3/5 was pretty good, but this is downright INCREDIBLE. Self-Starter Foundation and Frenchkiss Records have such a wonky-rawk gem on their hands that I really can't imagine LSV improving on this (though lets hope they do). I hesitate to draw comparisons with other bands, but I'm reminded of Darling...

2.0 out of 5 stars carnivore
We could list the significant forms, stances and pretenses that went into the making of this elaborate collage, but that would be as interesting as hearing this record a second time. How about the real stuff? The acts they filched? Left behind, in a world where enough noise can appear as soul.... Oh yeah, sound and fury, signifying nothing. If Korn is corn, this is...

5.0 out of 5 stars Rawr., August 26, 2000

Les Savy Fav plays some great post-rock anthemic tunes. Their album 3/5 was pretty good, but this is downright INCREDIBLE. Self-Starter Foundation and Frenchkiss Records have such a wonky-rawk gem on their hands that I really can't imagine LSV improving on this (though lets hope they do). I hesitate to draw comparisons with other bands, but I'm reminded of Darling Little Jackhammer (for the chaotic-rock stylings), Panel Donor (for the equally composed- and calculating-rock stylings) and a smidge of Fugazi (just because).

Noisy mid-western indie-rock fans can't go wrong with Les Savy Fav, and The Cat and The Cobra is easily the best place to start. If you dig this (and you should) you can move on to 3/5, which stands as a pretty endearing record on its own.

5.0 out of 5 stars but it does have soul, July 7, 2004

In response to the review that gave it 3 stars: his point that enough noise is confused with soul doesn't make sense. Listening to Tim's lyrics as well as the musicianship, I hear inventive, very soulful music. Regardless of genre distinctions and complex analysis of the scene's context, this is a moving album.

This record is amazing. i would describe it as art-punk that is not too arty and not too punky. it has such LSF classics as We've got boxes, Who rocks the party, and Wake up! but my personal favorite(and the best song on the album)is 'the end.' it stands out because of its jazzy time signature. the best part of the album is when tim sings "call me when you wanna call me" les savy fav have one coolest sounds i've ever heard. if your bored with current music scene(and you should be) look no further than les savy fav. check out liars too they're another awesome NYC band. OH yeah, if you haven't seen LSF Live you must see it. they put on the best live show i've ever seen. Plus tim is completly out of his mind.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ignore the first review..., May 25, 2000
This review is from: Cat And The Cobra (Audio CD)
To think that the first reviewer would mention LSF and Korn in the same sentence is troublesome... While LSf play airtight aggressive music they are a much different entity than the knuckle-dragging, halfwits that make up Korn and it's equally dim fan base. "The Cat and the Cobra" bangs out track after track of intelligent quirky punk rock that pays homage to such early 90's indie rock luminaries as Brainiac, Polvo, Fugazi, and Unwound.

5.0 out of 5 stars Les Savy Fav "The Cat and the Cobra", May 10, 2000
This review is from: Cat And The Cobra (Audio CD)
The Cat and the Cobra is an excellent collection of songs written over the better part of 1999. With the departure of original drummer Pat Mahoney, Les Savy Fav, in 1999 welcomed college pal and former Hellbender drummer Harrison Haynes. Haynes brough a freshness to the band that created, I think, the perfect chemistry that the Fav have been looking. The Cat and the Cobra is a blend of familiar sounds that reminisce the Pixies, Rye Coalition and the DC punk movement. The Fav are no strangers to the studio, and with help from Brooklynite Nicholas, they mastered the perfect stew of sounds. Guitarist Seth Jabour and bassist Syd Butler(founder of French kiss)write the perfect, quintasential parts making the music both melodic and at times super experimental. WIth the recent departure of former guitarist Gibb Slythe, Jabour has found no problem comprising multiple guitar lines live. He's a wiz. Vocalist Tim Harrington, one of the most intense vocalists, has an imagination constantly flowing in all directions. You have to see them live. The Fav will be doing an East coast tour beginning May 19th with Modest Mouse and Califone. oh yeah, in regards to the other kids review, Harrison Haynes is a guy and has a girlfriend.........

5.0 out of 5 stars rock for all, July 25, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cat And The Cobra (Audio CD)
i think it's totally awesome that someone who's into hardcore and korn can get into les savy fav. i feel as though i have witnessed a beautiful awakening. i remember when i was in high school, listening to more-or-less mainstream metal because I was unaware of the post-punk indie-rock world, and how "repeater" confused and amazed me, and how to describe that sort of music if you've never heard it before? hopefully "the cat and the cobra" has opened up our friend korn-lover to a whole new world of rock.

the cat and the cobra is one of the best postpunk cd's i own, a masterpiece, the first time i listend to this cd it left me in awe and hasent left my cd player since, i suggest you buy it, and buy it now! The only other thing i have to say is whats up with all the korn comparisons, i hate korn their horrible, and everyone else should hate korn as well! les savy fav is not, in the least, like korn. i also hate that deering ragan reviewer, he's a moron first of all he likes korn, and second of all he spells fugazi wrong, what a dink, i hope he reads this and realises hes retarted.

This cd is by a band that has graduated from "rhode island school of design" and have even signed themselves to their own label. I am the cousin of the drummers boyfriend and she has only had great things to tell me about it. Than i went and bought it... it turned out one of the best hardcore cds i have. I am a big fan of Korn les savy fav( though not as hard) is a great band coming out of the new scene in New York. they have already done a north american tour and have been written up next to bands like primus and fugavi. The cd is full of great rhythms and heavy bass and drum beats as well as great phrases such as "f**k the champagne we want gin"
