Cat Crimes November 1, 1997
Continuing the tradition of their beloved Cat Crimes anthologies, editors Martin H. Greenberg, Ed Gorman, and Larry Segriff have outdone themselves. Whether your tastes run to cozy or bloodcurdling, whodunit or hard-boiled, Maine Coon or Scottish Fold, Cat Crimes for the Holidays guarantees hours of pure pleasure and delight.

Editorial Reviews

From Library Journal

This latest in the "Cat Crimes" series (Cat Crimes, Cat Crimes II, Feline and Famous, etc.) features 14 original stories by such authors as Jeremiah Healy, Marlys Millhiser, and Nancy Pickard. Gathered by three award-winning editors, these entertaining stories show how cats enjoy any holiday.

From Kirkus Reviews

Nineteen new stories commemorating not just the December holidays but a veritable calendar of cats, from New Year's (Barbara Paul) to Martin Luther King Day (Jon L. Breen), Valentine's Day (Jeremiah Healy), Presidents' Day (Peter Crowther and Stewart von Allmen), St. Patrick's Day (John Lutz, J.N. Williamson), Easter (Bill Crider), Mother's Day (Christine Matthews and Robert J. Randisi), Memorial Day (Marlys Millhiser), Father's Day (Richard T. Chizmar), Independence Day (Jan Grape), Halloween (Carole Nelson Douglas), Veterans' Day (Tracy Knight, Gary A. Braunbeck), Thanksgiving (Barbara Collins), Hanukkah (Morris Hershman), Christmas (Graham Masterton), and even Boxing Day (Nick Hassam); Nancy Pickard's cute old-time anecdote isn't tied to any special day. Sadly, linking cats to unexpected holidays taxes most contributors' ingenuity to the limit. Lutz's and Chizmar's and Crider's stories are mere sketches; Braunbeck's and Healy's and Millhiser's feature predictably avenging felines. Except for Masterton's neatly compressed whodunit, even stories that begin promisingly (e.g., Hassam's tale of a drug-courier cat tied up in quarantine) are woefully undeveloped. As in earlier entries in this long-running series (Cat Crimes Takes a Vacation, 1995, etc.), love of cats shines through a lot more clearly than love of mystery or suspense. -- Copyright ©1997, Kirkus Associates, LP. 4.0 out of 5 stars Fun Read, February 6, 2002

From Christmas to New Year's this book has stories for all of them. Even the holidays less known, such as Boxing Day. Some of the stories are written by famous authors such as Carole Nelson Douglas the author of the Midnight Louie series. While others are written by unknowns.

This was an enjoyable book, but slacked off at times, producing somewhat boring stories. I recommend this book to any fans of mysteries, and cat lovers.

4.0 out of 5 stars 'Purr-fect' for the holidays!, October 8, 2004

Probably one has to be a cat lover-at least to a certain extent-to appreciate the full impact of "Cat Crimes for the Holidays." And, yes, this is another collection of cat stories, but this anthology purports to reveal how cats can relate to the holidays!

That said, it's an easy read, and one that is a bit of fun. There are 19 stories here, exploring the gamut of the holidays with kitty lit (sorry!). My favorite is Jon L. Breen's
cat story for Martin Luther King Day! Jeremiah Healy's Valentine's Day and Bill Crider's Easter stories are also top notch.

Funny and sometimes not, these stories offer a literary diversion that's fun to appreciate! (Billyjhobbs@tyler.net)

5.0 out of 5 stars Cure and entertaining, December 6, 1997
By A Customer
This review is from: Cat Crimes for the Holidays (Hardcover)
The seventh entry in the short story series starring feline detectives overall is very good, but has some disappointing tales. Each of the stories involve a crime occurring on a different holiday. The holidays range from the obvious such as Christmas and New Years Day to the less celebrated (at least in America) such as Arbor and Boxing days. Some of the most renowned cat detectives,d including the world famous Midnight Louie, are featured.

This collections is well written, but some of the more famous cats like Louie only whet the audience's appetitie for the longer full length novel format. Still, fans of the sub-genre or just cat fans in general will enjoy this and the previous six cat crime books.
