2.0 out of 5 stars Politically Liberal Book For Children January 22, 2013
Format:Kindle Edition|Verified Purchase
The best thing about this book is the wonderful artwork by Bill Bruning. Beautifully drawn, cute and colorful. Top shelf artwork.

The story however very liberal in it's thinking. Instead of the dog and cat running for office with the desire to empower the people to stand on their own two feet they both want to give things to people. Yes, I know politicians do this but that's why we are in the mess we are in today. I did however read the book to my boys because it's a great tool for teaching them the brainwashing power of a socialist government. What sounds good isn't always good.

The writing is pretty good but beware of the moral principles of the story.

Update: Within an hour of writing this review I received two unhelpful replies. Looks like I hit the nail on the head. Nothing worse for a liberal then to have their agenda exposed. LOL. Keep them coming.

5.0 out of 5 stars This book gets my vote! November 5, 2012
By mactee
Format:Kindle Edition
When people argue whether or not cats are better than dogs, what they're really trying to say is "I like to think of myself as independent and mysterious, so I like cats" or "I'm loyal and devoted and will always be at your side, so I like dogs".
Julia Dweck's latest sharp-witted offering points out how this applies to politics, too, and tells children that voting is not too far removed from choosing your favourite pet - do you think one candidate has finer qualities than the other and which one matches your view of the world most closely?
As usual, though, the sublime Ms.Dweck does it in such a clever, witty way that children will see these ideas in action and have great fun thinking about issues that would normally come across as rather stuffy and boring. Making politics entertaining for anyone is quite a task, but to do it for young children is a massive achievement, and that's just what this book has done.
Personally, I'd buy it just for the great line "And no one would be hesitant to have two pets for President"! But the book has so much more of that kind of thing and is accompanied by beautifully rendered illustrations from the very talented Bill Bruning.
I could use an old fashioned term and say it's the 'cat's whiskers', but I don't want to be accused of favouritism, so I'll just say it's really brilliant and I recommend it highly.

5.0 out of 5 stars Cat or Dog a must read November 4, 2012
Format:Kindle Edition
I rated Cat or Dog For President 5 stars but let me be honest. This book just raised the bar. If I was to rate this book honestly it would definitely not be lower than a 6.

I LOVE smart books geared at kids.

What does it take to be a smart book?

Real books tackling real issues in a way kids can understand it.
Without talking to them like they are stupid or less important than adults.

Cat or Dog for President is a smart book.
Tackling a real issue in a humorous kid friendly way.

The illustrations are amazing. Bright and pleasing to the eye.
You can not read this book with out laughing.

Kids love books with animals. Heck adults love books with animals. So this book is sure to please everyone.
Extra bonus is you're slipping in something educational.

An election be it in the USA, Canada or the North Pole is important to everyone. (or should be!) What better way to teach your child about what an election is while reading a fun book about a cat and a dog.

Geared at readers 4+
Definitely a book that should be on every parent/child to be read pile.

Elections, pretty boring for most people, but what about animals? Cat of Dog for President has a man or woman (it's not disclosed) wondering who to vote for in a US election. Note the story is applicable to everywhere and a good general lesson about the election process no matter where you live but the illustrations often use the stars, and colours of the American flag on things such as the household furniture, wool, clothing, even the text uses red and blue letters amongst the black. Anyway the would be voter in this one is told by her father that two men will run and wonders what it would be like if her two pets, a cat and dog competed to get elected instead. She then goes onto explain what each would do in the campaign, including as humans do, try and bribe voters with incentives (wool balls in the case of the cat), give speeches to crowds, and try and make the other person look bad.

Cat or Dog for President is formatted to take up the whole screen in landscape mode on the Kindle Fire, with bright high definition fun illustrations. The text appears as part of the image on a ribbon ensuring there is no way they end up on different screens like unfortunately a lot of hastily put together Kindle books do. Formatting a book to take up the entire screen should really be the norm and mandatory for sale here on Amazon but it's not yet the case, so I always like to give accolades where they're due to the authors who take the time to ensure their reader's experience is as good as it should be.

A good tale to bring out when there's a local or even national election if your kid is at the age where they are curious about it to stimulate further discussion.
