Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review
How long can you stare at another kid from three inches away and not laugh? In "The No Laugh Race," 1 of 19 songs in "The Cat in the Hat Songbook," you get to find out--and the kid who laughs last is the winner. Each song has full piano score by Eugene Poddany, and many have simple guitar chords, too. Whether waltzy, marchish, andante doloroso, or "Ad lib rubato tempo to simulate sneeze," these songs are bound to get the whole family caterwauling--which, as the first song affirms, is "good for tongues, and necks and knees, of people, bees, and chimpanzees." Some of the lyrics are even a teensy bit educational, amid the usual madness: "I Can Figure Figures" includes such unusual sums as "One plus one minus one is none. None plus none minus none is none." It all adds up to a lot of musical fun. --Richard Farr

Product Description
Illus. in full color. This classically wacky songbook contains 19 Seuss-songs for the beginning singer. There are lively songs like "Plinker Plunker" and "The No Laugh Race," bedtime songs like "Lullaby for Mr. Benjamin B. Bickelbaum," and just plain silly songs like "Cry a Pint." With a sturdy binding that opens flat for easy use, and simple piano and guitar arrangements, The Cat in the Hat Songbook is truly something to sing about!

5.0 out of 5 stars A trip down memory lane worth sharing with your kids, July 1, 1998
By A Customer
ME TOO! I'm 33, and that's EXACTLY how I learned pints, quarts, and gallons! And there is no better silly song for camp dinner than Super Supper March. Two Legs, Four Legs is a perfect thing to sing to baby while changing a diaper... and my kids always crack up when we sing the No-Laugh Race! And for the 6 year old who's just lost a tooth, try In My Bureau Drawer. I wish I could get my hands on the record, put out in '67 by RCA! (PLEASE SOMEBODY, persuade them to re-publish it! It would be a real hit!) This is a real gem! The songs have the most interesting harmonies, so appropriate to all the crazy words Seuss is famous for. I showed my copy to my son's music teacher, and she fell in love with it.

5.0 out of 5 stars I'm still singing "My Uncle Terwilliger Waltzes with Bears", November 1, 1997
By A Customer
Yes, I still know all the words to "My Uncle Terwilliger Waltzes with Bears" even though I'm 34! For years brother remembered how many pints were in a quart, how many quarts were in a gallon, by singing "I'm So Sad I Could Cry a Pint." This was my favorite childhood book (and record) and I'm thrilled to see it's still in print. I highly recommend it for children...and someday I'd like to see an alternative rock tribute album to the amazing songs here!

4.0 out of 5 stars Great so far...but daunting for a beginner piano player!, January 27, 2009
When this music book arrived, I was a little concerned flipping through it because I could tell it was above my ability to play at full speed (except with a lot of practice of course).

So I just went in and tried to play the first song over and over. Love it. Love the words, and my kid sings it out of the blue every once in a while. So I am determined to learn how to play the others, as the music writing is excellent imo, and worth the effort to learn these very original songs.

Will probably increase my piano skills in the process, so everybody wins! Great success! ;)

4 stars (4.5 if I could) for originality, value, and kid reaction.
