Exciting reading,
By
This review is from: Cat-Head Biscuits & Squirrel Stew (Paperback)
I started reading Cat-Head Biscuits and Squirrel Stew and could hardly put it down. Reading this book was the next best thing to being on a hunt with the author. I experienced the excitement of seeing a huge Elk walking over a ridge, aiming and firing and seeing the animal fall and slowly slide down the ridge. The dangers experienced by the author brings a chill to the reader. The stories in this book are well written and easy to read. The advice offered by Mr. Roof regarding preparing for the hunt is a must for anyone expecting to leave for that hunt of a lifetime.

Mr. Roof, a literary Casanova,

This book takes you away! With every word, you are drawn deeper into the life and antics of this fine story teller, and regale in his emotions. I went away feeling as though I literally LIVED the authors childhood, hunting experiences, fears, dreams, and sentiments. I was ON that porch with Mrs. Walker as she was summoned with needle and thread to doctor a hunting dogs mishap, as she revealed her hard life with only the look in her eyes. I could feel the nights air on my skin sitting on the bridge fishing, I was walking the path back to the house after the excitement of the "unexpected" catch in the darkness! I could go on and on with the wonderments of this stimulating collection of Mr. Roofs hunting stories, and it's definitely one of those books you'll read more than once. I absolutely loved it!!

A Book You Can't Put Down,
By Mrs. Roger C. Lyon (Silvis, Illinois) - See all my reviews

Cat-Head Biscuits and Squirrel Stew is the next best thing to having a personal conversation with the author. He has the gift of making ordinary events become real. Satisfying the suspense he creates, becomes top priority as the scene he creates unfolds. As you read his stories, you find yourself saying, "That's exactly how I would have felt." Or, "I could never have had the patience, or courage to do that!" Anyone who doesn't take a look at this book, doesn't know what he/she is missing.

I just finished the reading of this fine quality book. From the beginning of George Roofs hunting career to presnt day, he has been a great example for all hunters to follow. The book is filled with great stories that all hunters can relate to. I found it even more enjoyable for the writer does not fill his stories with unbelievable information, he is true to his word and his writings are all but incredible. Take the time and read the book, from page one you will be entertained and find yourself wandering throught the woods alongside this great hunter and writer.

Son loves book!!!,
This review is from: Cat-Head Biscuits & Squirrel Stew (Paperback)
I bought the book for my 12 year old son. He loves it and hasn't hardly put it down. He says he feels like he is there hunting and wishes he lived when George did. He took the book to school to share with his friends. He also bought one for his school principal who is helping him get started with taxidermy. It is nice to have some positive influences for your kids when there are so many bad influences out there to worry about. I am definitely going to buy more copies for the other hunters in my family. What a great gift.

If you're a hunter, former hunter, or have never hunted a day in your life, George Steven Roof's book, "Cat-Head Biscuits and Squirrel Stew" will keep your interest. As each chapter passes, Roof's hunting skills increase, and as he grows older the game he pursues gets larger and at times more dangerous. He eats what he kills and prays not to wound. All of Roof's descriptions of the land and the game he hunts could not have been improved on if Ernest Hemingway had been his editor.

A Gem of a book,
By Timothy P. O'Connor (Wyoming, Delaware USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cat-Head Biscuits & Squirrel Stew (Paperback)
I picked up George Roof's book on a lark at the local bookstore here in Dover Delaware and I am glad I did. It is a superbly written book by one of Delaware's own. George manages to weave a tapestry of his love for the outdoors, hunting and conservation under one cover. He sprinkles in quotes by Aldo Leopold and Teddy Roosevelt while taking the reader through a journey of some of his greatest hunts. For George it is not about the kill but about being outdoors with great friends on a magical quest to hunt some of North America's biggest game. Clearly for him life is large and George has tried to get as much of it as he can before he departs this planet. If you love the outdoors, hunting and conservation then you will love this book. When I started I could not put it down. George this Bud is for you. Thanks! Tim O'Connor

Excellent use of details truly brings these stories to life.,

This is a great book, a "must read" for anyone, and everyone. I couldn't put it down, once I started it!This author is a superb writer, who describes the characters so vividly, that I felt like I got to know the people, as I read about them in the book. I nearly cried when I read of Mr. Walker's death, after I had grown to appreciate him, as I read the "Wild Hogs" story. George Roof is certainly a master of "painting pictures with words". His excellent use of details, truly brings these stories to life. I felt like I was right there, seeing, and feeling, the action first hand, as he described situations and events. The suspense in the stories, gained momentum with each page I turned. Often, I laughed out loud, and at other times, I fought back the tears. Any book by George Roof, is now on the top of my "must read list". I highly recommend this book to anyone
