Book Description

October 1, 1999

• A fascinating, illustrated exploration of the integral roles cats have played in our myths, legends, and history.

• By the highly acclaimed author of over 30 books on magic and folklore, including the bestselling Goddess in My Pocket.

• Examines the mythological significance of cats in our legends and folklore, and provides an overview of cats and feline imagery in spiritual traditions around the world.

• Presents the feline connection to magic, including amulets, charms, spells, and rituals.

In German they are called ket, in French, chat, in Arabic, quttah--but with little concern for what name we've assigned them, cats have sauntered into almost every corner of human society and history. In ancient Egypt a cat-faced goddess was worshiped and immortalized in the art of Egyptian tombs. In Scandinavian lore, Freyja, a goddess of the night, rode in a cart drawn by cats. Cats appear in our folktales and in our literature, even in our everyday speech.

In Cat Magic, Patricia Telesco takes us on a fascinating tour of the different roles cats have played in human experience, with over 50 illustrations documenting the appearance and importance of cats in our mythology, in the spiritual teachings and religious practices of our ancestors, and in totems, spells, and other rituals of magic. Cat Magic tells of cat ginii and of charms of protection. It explains astrology for determining your cat's personality, creating magical blessings, and using crystal and color therapy for the feline in the house. Mysterious and independent, cunning and fierce, gentle and affectionate, cats continue to win our hearts and imaginations, providing a link to our past and present, and to ourselves.

Editorial Reviews

Amazon.com Review

Mystery unfolds as Telesco paints a portrait of America's favorite pet, leading readers through a tour-de-force of the feline relationship to humans throughout history. To explore the cat's role in society is to look deeply into the metaphysical realm. Cats in symbolism, cats in myth, cats in witchcraft, cats in worship, cats in divination--it's all here, brought to life in over 100 illustrations and photographs. This is a complete cat-pendium with a list of breeds, a list of astrological descriptions, a list of colors to alter your puss's behavior, and a list of what to do for common cat ailments such as ticks or diarrhea. If you are thinking you may like the company of a kitty, Telesco even provides a spell to draw the purrfect furry friend to your door. --P. Randall Cohan

4.0 out of 5 stars Puuurrrrrrr-fect Gift, December 23, 2001
By
This review is from: Cat Magic: Mews, Myths, and Mystery (Paperback)
Ok, I like cats, always have and always will. When I saw this book, I was unsure, but it's a great little book.

This is the ultimate Pagan Coffee Table Book. There are some great pictures and illustrations in this book which makes it the quintessential cat volume.

It is chock full of cat information; cat history, cat mysteries, cat lore, cat superstitions, cats in the house, cats in the wild, cat spells, cat tails, cat ghosts, cat myths, black cats, white cats, cat breeds, cat statues, cats in art, cat witticisms, cat.com, catalogues and cat-a-lists.

I want to mention the excellent printing job done on this book. Printed and bound in Italy, it is quality printing as well as quality material.

This is a purrrrrr-fect gift for any cat lover, and makes a distinctive present for the Witch with that special familiar with whom they wish foster even more understanding.

4.0 out of 5 stars Cute book, April 4, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Cat Magic: Mews, Myths, and Mystery (Paperback)
Cat Magic is a cute, well-written book about the power that cats hold over us. Although some of the legends and folklore are pretty well-known, others are very fascinating. Written from a pagan point of view, this book is definitely recommended.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Beautifully charming book about cats!, March 9, 2003
This review is from: Cat Magic: Mews, Myths, and Mystery (Paperback)
This book will make a great gift for any cat lover, whether Pagan or not. The book is filled with fun folklore and history about cats. There are legends and beliefs from all over the world! These include cats roles in spirituality, superstitions, gypsies, dreams, symbols, and even a little section on the astrology of your cat. There is also brief information on cat care. The layout of the book is GORGEOUS with photographs or illustrations on every page. The book is made of high quality paper as well! This book is as gorgeous as it is informative and entertaining and I give it an enthusiastic 5 stars! A must have for cat mommies!
