Masterfully Done,
By Denise McDonald "Dennie" (Texas, United States) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cat Master (Hardcover)
Ms. Pemberton has a wonderfully unique story and such a knack for weaving a fanciful tale from a perspective you may never have considered before. You'll fall in love with her four legged characters--be it feline, canine or reptilian. An entertaining story from the beginning to the end and twelve to one hundred and twelve will enjoy this book!

As a cat-lover, I dove into this book expecting a pleasant afternoon's escape read--something to while away a few idle moments. Little did I expect to be caught up in a mythic battle that kept me on the edge of my seat. Battle lines are drawn; good and evil clash; but the black and white turn to shades of grey. Pemberton creates full rich characters which rise above the stereotypes of hero and villain. Her four legged characters become real on the page and make the reader care about them and their lives.
I disagree with the age category listed with the book. I am recommending this book to all my adult friends--cat-lovers or not--as one they will enjoy rereading many times.

Not just for children,

This review is from: Cat Master (Hardcover)
Nine-to ninety-year-olds will find these characters and their adventure together enchanting, and the publisher has created a handsome volume. I'm ordering copies for my favorite adult friends, my children, and my grandchildren. And one of my great-grandchildren. I'm not telling the others because they can't read yet. All of them will love Buddy the Cat, Orrie, the lizard with an attitude, the possum with the insatiable appetite, and the rest of these unique creatures, created by a writer who, it is obvious, truly loves animals.

What a good read . . .,
This review is from: Cat Master (Hardcover)
I can literally spend hours searching for a good book. Sometimes I get lucky. The Cat Master is a fantastic read. Every page is filled with adventure, witty dialogue, humor, pathos ~ and all from the animals' perspective. The conflict rests inside Buddy, the main character who must fight the desire to remain an 'indoor' or seek his rightful place 'outdoor' in the animal world. New author Bonnie Pemberton has created a menagerie of quirky, funny characters, including Orie a lizard who believes himself to be far bigger and better than his small stature represents. I highly recommend this wonderful hero's journey for young and old, a story of good vs. evil, love and loss, failures and triumphs. Buy this book. You won't be disappointed.

Rare prose that jump off the page,
This review is from: Cat Master (Hardcover)
Descriptions so real and imaginative they inspire this page turning novel for cat lovers and non cat lovers alike because of their crisp fluidity. Wonderful chapters leave you hanging on by a claw. This story is a fun ride for people of all ages. I would recommend this book to anyone wishing for a fun summer read. It has excellent word choices that will keep YA readers interested until the end. There is just enough spice to lure in the YA readers who may be reluctant to engage in a fantasy type novel. I would recommend this book to my high school students as well as my friends and family. I loved it.

Modern Day Myth,
This review is from: Cat Master (Hardcover)
The Cat Master is so much more than an engaging animal tale. This first novel truly is a modern day myth--fresh and imaginative--engaging and suspenseful. Pemberton has a way of creating animal characters that you care about--that seem more real then the people next door. In a distinctive lyrical voice she tells a story that's impossible to put down. This is a must read for anyone who loves animals and adventure. The illustrations are stunning. Another added bonus.

Bonnie Pemberton has penned a real gem in THE CAT MASTER!
This book is a great read for anyone, a true cross-over novel, not just to be enjoyed by young adults. I would recommend it to ANYONE, especially those who have a deep love of animals and wonder what drives them to do what they do. This well-written text with excellently drawn characters makes me eagerly await Pemberton's next novel.

City Streets Filled with Danger,
By Kathy (Fort Worth, Tx) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cat Master (Hardcover)
"The Cat Master" shows the reader a world filled with danger that is imposed on man's tamed creatures. These dangers are more often than not created by the very civilization which has tamed them. I found this book an enjoyable read and one that I wanted to ready quickly, but ended up taking it slow. Lots to think about, fun for adults as well as older children.

If you receive this book in the evening, don't open it - unless you're willing to stay up late to finish. Bonnie's fur covered characters don't just develop .... they pop off of the page and grab you in their claws.
You'll find yourself cheering on a lizard, crying for a dog, mourning with a mockingbird and sharing an epic struggle between honor and greed with a cast of heroic kitties. Highly recommended for anyone who ever wondered what cats think as they stare out the window. |
