Book Description

August 1989
Tinka Jones needs to escape her London life and her job as a journalist. She decides to visit Amista, a friend that she has been writing to for some time. Amista lives in an isolated house in the Welsh hills and Tinka is looking forward to the peace and tranquillity as well as to meeting her new friend. However, when Tinka arrives in Wales she is completely unprepared for the reception she receives. The locals have never heard of Amista and soon an increasingly frustrated Tinka begins to question everything she thought she knew. Who has been writing her letters if Amista doesn't exist, and if she does exist then where is she? As events take a more sinister turn Tinka finds herself growing more uneasy. Stuck in a desolate house on the rain-swept hills she encounters unsettling and bizarre visitations as she sets out to unearth the mystery that surrounds Amista and the house - with chilling consequences. First published in 1950 Cat and Mouse is a classic thriller.

5.0 out of 5 stars Deserves its reputation as a classic!, July 24, 2011

A bit of Jane Eyre, a hint of Northanger Abbey, lots of local Welsh color, and a truly nail-biting ending. Plays by the rules like a golden age mystery should, too. And don't skip the dedication and introduction! Well worth seeking out.

5.0 out of 5 stars A Perfect Crime Story!, August 7, 2007
This review is from: Cat and Mouse (Paperback)
This little book has everything - wonderful characters, a gloomy estate home in a remote location, queer and threatening characters, a tight plot, and best of all, a beautiful location. The book is set right in the middle of the Welsh highlands, and Ms. Brand does a wonderful job of describing the wildness and the beauty of Wales in this book. The book is a roller-coaster ride because it runs from terror to terror, and it will chill your soul as you read. It is also quite funny, and the quaint Welsh names used in the book add to the charm. The book is about what happens to an agony-aunt when she finds herself right in the middle of a scenario just like she gets letters about daily. When she is in London she works on a women's paper, and she thinks she knows it all. But when she gets to Pentre Trist, she finds herself hopelessly at sea while she is trying to deal with what she thinks is love at first sight to a broody, Byronic handsome man. This book is a wonderful way to spend a summer evening. I recommend it highly.
