Deserves its reputation as a classic!,

A bit of Jane Eyre, a hint of Northanger Abbey, lots of local Welsh color, and a truly nail-biting ending. Plays by the rules like a golden age mystery should, too. And don't skip the dedication and introduction! Well worth seeking out.

A Perfect Crime Story!,

This little book has everything - wonderful characters, a gloomy estate home in a remote location, queer and threatening characters, a tight plot, and best of all, a beautiful location. The book is set right in the middle of the Welsh highlands, and Ms. Brand does a wonderful job of describing the wildness and the beauty of Wales in this book. The book is a roller-coaster ride because it runs from terror to terror, and it will chill your soul as you read. It is also quite funny, and the quaint Welsh names used in the book add to the charm. The book is about what happens to an agony-aunt when she finds herself right in the middle of a scenario just like she gets letters about daily. When she is in London she works on a women's paper, and she thinks she knows it all. But when she gets to Pentre Trist, she finds herself hopelessly at sea while she is trying to deal with what she thinks is love at first sight to a broody, Byronic handsome man. This book is a wonderful way to spend a summer evening. I recommend it highly.
