The Cat is GREAT!!!!, October 7, 2009
Judie Tzuke's eerily melodic album, The Cat is Out, is a great one. The best songs are the haunting "This Side of Heaven" and "Girl Without A Name" which are moody and atmospheric, synth-wise, but melodic as well. Another great song is track 1, the insistent "How Sweet It Is". These are actually great "night" or "night driving" songs. This woman's ethereal, reedy voice would be perfect on smooth jazz albums as well.
There is a woman named Helen Rogers who has accompanied Paul Hardcastle on many of his "Jazzmasters" albums. Judie reminds me of her. Both have angelic voices, but can bring feeling and energy to the proceedings as well.
Two other standout traxx are "Falling" (excellent melody and vocal refrain) and the catchy "Racing Against Time"--almost an anomaly of a track because it sounds more dance-oriented than any other song on the album.
I highly recommend this album. Look for the old 1984/85 video to "This Side Of Heaven" where Judy and her excellent band really show what they can do---the guitarist shines on this track and the keyboardist is responsible for the addictive and swirling sound. I believe this video-concert footage was from a gig in London. Sure, there is some synth on the track, but it's synth with feeling.
"Girl Without A Name" has a haunting refrain and is just a well-crafted pop song throughout. It's just about, if not solidly in place as, my favorite track.
I can listen to both over and over again, and I bet you will too.
Judie can surprise as well, as her voice can be quite energized and rocking too. You won't hear much of that on this album, but many of her other songs show this ability. Parts of this album are almost New Wave, in a way---and that is great, for New Wave was a great musical movement because of its original and addictive sounds.
I give this album 5 out of 5 stars for its very cool overall 80's feel and for Judie's obvious and aforementioned vocal skills.
