Book Description

December 2002
Things are changing for Cat Hood, a small-town carpenter living in the mountains. Her first book has been published, her agent's making big plans, and the whole town thinks she's a celebrity. She's also got a long-lost brother who turns up out of nowhere with a wife who's pregnant with twins, a '59 Harley Duo Glide that makes a funny noise, a busted-up hand that puts her out of commission, and a German Shepherd named Mike who won't get off the couch. Enter Melissa McHeaney - doctor, painter, green-eyed Irish lass. The one. And when the pair finally connect, it clicks so loud everybody close to Cat hears it. But Cat is dragging her feet, driving her friends - and herself - crazy. Is she scared off by a good thing? Or does the problem run deeper than that? There's a ghost in Cat's head and heart and a story waiting to be told - the story of her grandmother Kate, who raised Cat and her brother after the death of their parents. The Hoods had emigrated from Scotland in the late 30s, leaving home under mysterious circumstances that Cat was certain were the cause of Kate's cold, harsh brand of mothering that sent her brother Will running for his freedom - and Cat running from herself. Cat Rising is the richly drawn tale of one woman's quest to build a future through the discoveries of her past. Cynn Chadwick paints a vibrant portrait of community - friends and family together for the long haul, no matter how bumpy the ride.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Delightful and moving... A warm and gentle story about coming to terms with both the past and the future... at once funny, poignant, heroic, and often erotic. The only disappointment was that it had to come to an end." - Jeff Rackham, author of The Rag & Bone Shop

5.0 out of 5 stars In the Southern Tradition, October 24, 2003
By
Jeanne "weezbe" (Patterson, NY USA) - See all my reviews
This review is from: Cat Rising (Paperback)
Every once in awhile you come across a book that qualifies as literature: Bastard Out of Carolina, The Color Purple, Ruby Fruit Jungle. Cat Rising falls into that category. The fact that the main characters in Cat Rising are lesbians is both a bonus and inconsequential to the story.

Although the author, Cynn Chadwick, was born a Yankee (Southerners will know what I mean), she brings the hills of North Carolina into view with a Southern drawl whispering in your ear. This is a book so rich with language you can hear, taste, touch and smell the story. This is not to say that the writing is wordy, but it is alive with detail like the way someone leans against a doorway, or how the aroma of cooking fills a kitchen, or the way someone smells when you hug them. Reading this book is a sensory experience.

The story revolves around Cat (Catherine) Hood, an orphan, a writer, a lesbian, and lifetime resident of a Southern small town. Like all small towns, everybody knows everybody, and they still manage to coexist. As essential to the story as Cat, is her best friend, Lily. These two have known each other since childhood, and like sisters they love, embarrass, support and exasperate one another. The dialogue that ensues between these two is both funny and thought provoking. In fact, the dialogue throughout this book rings true to the ear and is as much a part of the character development as the action. It's the relationship between Lily and Cat that acts as the barometer of change that's occurring in Cat's life. It's a humorous, heart-wrenching, and vivid portrait in which we, the readers, glimpse our own humanity.

As much as this book is about self-discovery, it's also a story about family. It's because of Cat's real and extended family that she is both pushed and thwarted in her journey towards herself and her history. It may sound odd that a book whose main character is an orphan reflects the complexity of family life, but it does.

Buy this book. Curl up for a good read. It'll make you laugh and cry. It's a book that reminds us why we love to read in the first place. The other good news is that there's a sequel on the way.

5.0 out of 5 stars amazing novel, January 28, 2003
This review is from: Cat Rising (Hardcover)
I thought this book was incredible. Within the first few pages Chadwick draws you into this world full of amazing local color, friendship, romance and self discovery. The characterization of Cat and Lilly and the ups and downs of their friendship begs the reader to continue. The descriptive language within the book immerses you into the lives of characters rich with love, doubt, cold nights and hot coffee, german shepards and carpentry. It is a beautifully written novel that begs for a sequel. I would recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a novel to refresh their soul and enliven their senses.I got this book for christmas, and read it in two days, i couldnt put it down!

5.0 out of 5 stars A Great Book to have read, October 12, 2003
By A Customer
This review is from: Cat Rising (Paperback)
Cat Rising is a great book about finding someone to share your life with. Although it's lesbian literature, anyone can read it and take something from it. It has an impecable mountain backround to it that makes me feel at home. At points in the book I just wanted to curl up with my dog and sit in front a fire with a blanket and a cup of apple cider.
