Horrible Depressing Book Left my Daughter in Hysterics, October 5, 2001
By A Customer
This review is from: The Cat That Was Left Behind (Hardcover)
This book deserves a 0 as a children's book.
The story involves a boy who is abandoned by his mother because her new boyfriend doesn't want anything to do with him. He bounces around foster families until he finds one that is willing to adopt him. He adopts a homeless cat but is forced to abandon the cat when the foster family leaves their summer home to go back home. The child imagines the cat lying on a pile of garbage.
My daughter is an intelligent cheerful friendly child with above average compassion for defenseless creatures. She stayed up late finishing this book then came in my room in absolute hyterics about the ending. I guess she kept hoping that somehow everything would come out ok in the end. It took over an hour to stop her anguished sobs.
I know the world is not a wonderful joyous place for many children. Mandy is aware of that too and we encourage her compassion. I do not understand the point of trying to teach fourth grade children that the world is evil and uncaring.
The librarian has removed this book from our shelves after reading it.
