Book Description

A gripping epic of feline survival ...

The Australian feral cat is very much a product of human carelessness at best and callousness at worst. As truly wild as the great cats of Africa and Asia, the feral cat is perhaps the most successful predator in the Australian bush - and a growing threat to the rare native marsupials, birds and reptiles. Its agility, speed, hunting acumen and lack of natural predators make it one of that country's most destructive introduced species, and naturalists and conservationists see its eradication as vital but unlikely. Love it or hate it, the cat is a world-class survivor!

This is the story of such a cat, seen partly through the cat's own eyes and partly through those of an old bushman who is fascinated by a creature his logic tells him he should hate and despise. The cat's life-long fight for survival is an elemental story of the animal world, its interplay with the world of humans, and of the natural forces which shape both.

About the Author

Gordon Aalborg began his writing career as a reporter, columnist and photo-journalist in his native Alberta, Canada. He wandered off to Australia in the '70s, and CAT TRACKS evolved during his years as a radio and television journalist in Canberra, near where this novel is set. Aalborg made his name (pseudonym, actually) as a romance writer during the '80s and '90s; as Victoria Gordon, he wrote 20 contemporary Harlequin/Mills & Boon romances. Married to mystery novelist Denise Dietz, Aalborg lives on Vancouver Island, where he is currently writing a western historical novel.

More About the Author

GORDON AALBORG has been a journalist, broadcaster, editor and novelist in both Canada, where he was born, and in Australia, where he lived much of his adult life.

He has 20 Harlequin/Mills & Boon contemporary romance novels to his credit as VICTORIA GORDON, and is widely considered the first *male* author to find a significant place there.

In 2000, he returned from Tasmania to Canada and married fellow mystery and romance author Deni Dietz. He then had to take up mystery writing, he says, "as a means of maintaining equality in the household."

Most of his novels have Australian settings he has personally visited, and reflect his personal interests in such areas as carving, dog training and various outdoor activities.

A keen gundog enthusiast, Gordon is the foundation president and a life member of the Tasmanian Gundog Trial Association.

He and Deni now live on Vancouver Island, in Canada, with a chocolate Labrador named Magic.

5.0 out of 5 stars Commentary on today's world, July 3, 2002
By
This review is from: Cat Tracks (Hardcover)
To say that this book is magnificent is not giving it enough praise. To say that this book is so realistic is not enough. To say this book is a commentary on our world is not enough. This story of a feral cat is such that you are there with the cat, thru every positive and negative moment. You wonder just what is going to happen next. I laughed and cried and mainly worried throughout the novel. Such is the way of a great story teller. You live the book. You become the cat.

I could not put the book down, I was riveted to the story line from the beginning, following his growth, learning what he needed to survive thru trial and error. The ending was such a surprise to me.....I am encouraging everyone I know to read this book.

I learned as much from this book as the tomcat I believe. And to me, that is worth it. The care to detail Gordon took gives the belief you are there, with this cat, going thru all he has to, surviving. The human, Dave, is a caring man. Someone you want to cheer on as he attempts to aid in several ways.

I am going to insist my grandchildren, especially the oldest one, read this book. He will learn much and hopefully pass on what he has learned to others.

5.0 out of 5 stars The daily struggle for survival of a feral Australian cat, April 12, 2002
This review is from: Cat Tracks (Hardcover)
Gordon Aalborg's Cat Tracks is a unique and thoroughly engaging novel about the life and daily struggle for survival of a feral Australian cat, as wild in heart and spirit as the lions of Africa. Though often despised as an inimical predator to Australian wildlife, feral cats do not lead easy lives themselves, as Cat Tracks testifies. Cat Tracks is a most fascinating and rewarding read for cat lovers everywhere, compelling us to follow the journey and hardships of its feline protagonist to the very end.

5.0 out of 5 stars Wow! This book is unique., March 29, 2002
By A Customer
This review is from: Cat Tracks (Hardcover)
I've never read anything like Cat Tracks before. It's unique. It's an adult novel, not a children's book, although it reminded me (a little) of The Incredible Journey. I couldn't put Cat Tracks down, wouldn't stop for dinner or sleep - until I'd finished the last page. Cat Tracks tells the story of the "bond" between an Australian bushman and a feral cat, but most of the story is from the cat's viewpoint. I don't know how the author got into the cat's head so beautifully, but he did. There are environmental issues, and yet Mr. Aalborg is never preachy. If you like cats, you simply HAVE to read this book. It's a page-turner, very evocative, and a definite keeper. I'd even go so far as to say it could be a classic.
