Editorial Reviews

Review

Douglas's humor and keen plot twists keep this long-running series purring. (Publishers Weekly on Cat in a Red Hot Rage)

Nelson's 21st Midnight Louie tale is just as twisty, riveting and intriguing as the ones that came before. Even longtime fans of the series are bound to say 'Wow, I never saw that coming!' to the very end. (RT Book Reviews, Top Pick! 4 1/2 stars, on Cat in an Ultramarine Scheme)

Fans and feline fanciers will no doubt curl up and purr. (Kirkus Reviews on Cat in a Topaz Tango)

If either Mike Hammer or Columbo had a cat, it would be Midnight Louie. (Cat Fancy)

More About the Author

Award-winning ex-journalist and novelist Carole Nelson Douglas has written sixty-three novels ranging from historical and contemporary mystery and romance to science fiction thrillers to high and urban fantasy. No wonder her home office is a Twilight Zone landscape of mannequins in vintage dress.

She's a four-time Rita Award finalist and has RT Reviews Magazine lifetime achievement awards in Suspense, Mystery and as a Pioneer of Publishing. Currently, she writes two popular Las Vegas-set series: the Midnight Louie, feline PI, mysteries partially narrated by a "Sam Spade with hairballs" and the Delilah Street, Paranormal Investigator, noir urban fantasies of werewolf mobsters and Silver Screen zombies in a paranormal Sin City.

Douglas was the first author of a Sherlockian series with a female protagonist, diva-detective Irene Alder, the only woman to outwit Holmes, debuting with the New York Times Notable Book of the Year, Good Night, Mr. Holmes. Douglas says if she has a literary muse, it's definitely feline: mysterious, wise, playful, and packing sharp shivs in velvet gloves.

Midnight Louie is again pussyfooting around Vegas in support of his human, Temple Barr, as she juggles her obligations to various people. The suave black cat risks life and limb to ensure that his tender-hearted human does not pay for her compassion with more than she can afford to lose. The current fiance, Matt Devine must face a specter in the form of of the recovering semi-invalid Max Kinsella, who has returned to Sin City sans memory but full of regrets, adding to Matt's concerns about his future with Temple. It turns out that all three males will need to work together to ensure that their `doll' does not go the way of others as the Barbie Doll Killer continues to claim victims. An irresistible request by Savannah Ashleigh gives the diminutive Temple yet another mystery to ponder as she is introduced to a terminally ill ailurophile (cat lover) whose beloved felines are disappearing. Midnight Louie and his unsolicited sidekick and scion Midnight Louise practically run their respective pads off trying to monitor the key players who eventually converge on the domicile that houses the forlorn and neglected sisters, Yvette and Solange as matters come to a heated conclusion.

Another tale featuring a favorite noir character in his element as matters converge in this addition to the Midnight Louie alphabet of mysteries. It is depressing to see Max so reduced from his former greatness and mildly jarring to have the allusions of intimacy that are more prevalent between several of the main characters but perhaps this is a natural progression that was overlooked by my having missed a previous tale. Several loose ends are being addressed but there are still others that remain unresolved and will provide the feline sleuths with more prey as Temple continues to juggle her demanding males.

This is one of the better of the Midnight Louie series. I always look forward, with impatience, to the next book! A great, and fun, read!

I look forward to every one of these books. There are enough curves and hitches that it keeps the story interesting. I am always sorry when the book ends. There have been a couple of series where the stories are just not up to par. This series always keeps the standards high. I dread when the "Z" book comes out ... I like the way she writes, the story lines are good, and even though I wish a different outcome .. I still am hooked ;-)

This was an immensely satisfying book -- it answered some questions, had a great hook for the next book, and showed all the characters in their most three-dimensional form. One loose end gets tied up, one remains active, and a "blast from the past" re-appears. Two of them, actually, in Louie's case. I will miss Louie, Midnight Louise, Temple and the rest of the gang when the "Z" book gets written.

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful By Harriet Klausner #1 HALL OF FAME on August 2, 2011
Format: Hardcover
Las Vegas Public relations guru Temple Barr receives the shock of her life when she gets a call from overseas. Her former fiancé Max Kinsella lost his memory when he was injured by killers while looking for the evil Synth organization. Temple believed he died though he was actually an MIA. She picks him up at the airport and helps him settle in town. The next day Temple picks up her current fiancé Matt Devine; he feels insecure with Max back from the dead.

To get her mind focused on something besides the two men in her life, Temple accepts commercial actress Savannah Ashleigh's commission to investigate who killed her dying aunt's handyman. While she works the case, Captain Molina is interested in finding the Barbie Doll killer dubbed that ever he left next to his victims. The room of Molina's daughter had one in it though she doesn't play with them. Temple finds a link between the two cases which puts her life in danger from a psychopath while her leading man Midnight Louie has her back.

This Midnight Louie feline sleuth is a terrific meticulously complex whodunit with several suspects keeping things interesting for an already emotionally overloaded Temple. Ironically Max insists Temple is not his type though when he had his memory he was madly in love with her. Temple wants Max healed but believes her life is with doubting Matt. As her personal life turns even more convoluted if possible since Cat in an Ultramarine Scheme by the three M males, the murder case in which she becomes a target seems mentally safer.

I would recommend this series to anyone who likes cats, mysteries and Bogart. Midnight Louie is the feline equivalent of Sam Spade. The characters are memorable, especially Midnight Louie who writes a few chapters on his own to give us his side of the story. Each book presents a mystery with another mystery that continues with each new book. I can never wait for the next book in the series to arrive!
