PreSchool-Grade 2-A wayward cat appears on the doorstep of a kindly couple's home one evening. They invite him in and, in the tradition of magical realism, he can speak and understand their language, which is a combination of both English and Spanish. The hospitable Se-ora Rosa and Se-or Tom s say to Flynn, "Mi casa es su casa. My home is your home." Of course, the feline takes this rather too literally and sits directly on the table when lunch is served, and some gentle lessons in table manners are in order. After a satisfying repast of tuna tacos and the less delicious peas, Flynn finds a cozy spot where he can relax and stay awhile. The only thing that could add to his comfort is a "warm, roomy lap" or, better yet, two, and his hosts readily oblige. The depictions of the characters and setting are somewhat reminiscent of Leo Politi's artwork although perhaps less delicately executed. Warm colors and Latin American motifs contribute to the cultural interest of this lighthearted tale. Parents and caretakers may want to use this story as a prompt for discussions of etiquette and hospitality.
