I bought this for my two year old daughter's birthday. She loves the Mo Willems books and illustrations and this one is a hit. Cat the cat meets up with several friends (including Duck the duck, Fish the fish, Mouse the mouse...well, you get the picture). At the end up the book, Cat meets up with someone she doesn't recognize (an absolutely adorable monster) but sees this strange creature as a potential NEW friend. Cute lesson. Simple, easy book with brightly colored illustrations. I'd guess this is most appropriate for ages 1-4. Both my kids love it!

Cat the Cat is out on a walk. As she walks she meets her friends and introduces them to the reader. Towards the end of the book she runs into something that she has never seem before, a monster! She takes a chance and befriends the monster! She and her friends gain a new play mate though her action! This book is great for kids that are learning to read. It's very repetitive. It can also be used to teach kids about friendship. It could also be used to cover the character trait of tolerance, just because someone looks different from you that doesn't mean that you can't be their friend.

This amusing story in rhyme is an excellent way for your preschooler to learn phonemic awareness in this marvelous tale!,
This review is from: Cat the Cat, Who Is That? (Hardcover)
Cat the Cat jauntily approached a mouse who was bouncing a ball. "Cat the Cat, / who is that? / It's Mouse the Mouse!" The duo smiled and said hello to each other. Cat the Cat then skipped up to a duck cuddling her duckling. Very soon Cat the Cat knew that it was Duck the Duck. Making new friends and learning their names was fun. She quickly danced a little jig and approached Fish the Fish, who was wearing his blue swimming trunks as he busily blew bubbles.
Cat the Cat was enjoying her new friends ("Sure do!"), but soon she came upon a creature that was weird and strange looking. "EEP!" Her tail fluffed out and her wide eyes became wider than they ever were before. The monster had four arms coming out of its red shirt with the heart on it, four teeth, a blue tongue, and two eyes sticking out on the top of its head. "Cat the Cat, who it THAT?" Was Cat the Cat going to like this very strange critter? This amusing story in rhyme is an excellent way for your preschooler to learn phonemic awareness in this totally delightful tale. Before your youngster learns to read there are several pre-reading skills they need to become aware of when they are read and one is the phoneme, a small sound that helps differentiate one word from another. In this book the two rhyming words are "cat" and "that," a rhyming scheme that will quickly be picked up and detected by your little one (think Dr. Seuss when you think about phonemes). The artwork is simple, charming, and very appealing. If you are looking for a fabulous series that utilizes "early-learning concepts," Cat the Cat has them down pat!

Great for Beginning Readers!,

This book is fantastic for kids who are just learning to read! My son is in Kindergarten and hates the 100 Book Challenge books he has to choose from at school so I'm always looking for something to spark his interest, is easy and will help him to enjoy reading. This book really hit all three of those! 3 of his sight works are in the title and the repetitive pattern made it so he could read most of the book to me himself. What joy was on his face as he read this fun book and as always, finding the pigeon in one of the pages is always a highlight of Mo Willems books. I highly recommend this for early readers!

Mo Does It Again...,
This review is from: Cat the Cat, Who Is That? (Hardcover)
This a delightful book for small children. It could be read to toddlers, preschoolers, and kindergartners as there's something for everyone. For toddlers there's the fun drawings and cozy message about friends; and for pre-k and kindergarten there's also a subtle message that you don't have to be put off from being friends with children that might be a little different than you.
In addition, since "Cat the Cat" is written at the 1.0 Accelerated Reading level, and contains very few words, it would be a nice beginning reader for early readers. THE SKINNY::: "Cat the Cat, Who Is That?" is a very nice book for toddlers thru preschoolers. Some kindergartners will like it -- some will be looking for more. My children, who are now ancient by these standards, and I still read and enjoyed it -- basically because we're big Mo Willems fans. Pam T~ mom/blogger

I love Mo Willems. My daughter's favorite book is "Don't let the pigeon drive the bus!" This one is cute, because my two year old is starting to recognize words and loves to see CAT over and over. She also told me I wasn't allowed to be scared of the alien at the end. So cute.
