Review

So many thanks for making the movie. It's about time those of us who appreciate expressing our feminine sides, had a hero/heroine to look up to. --Louise Baltimore - tgforum.com

4.0 out of 5 stars Enjoyable September 4, 2010

Produced on a shoestring budget in Leeds England, Catalina: A New Kind of Superhero is an ambitious and highly original comedy from writer and director Kenneth Barker. A transvestite's journey of self actualisation attired in sci-fi apparel, this transgenre feature film is certainly like no other.

The main narrative finds our hero, young urbanite Ben Gerick, gradually coming to terms with his transvestism through newly found super powers and the trifling matter of having to save the world from evil intergalactic imperialist, General Krillgarth. As far fetched as this sounds in essence the plot convinces, and there are many laughs along the way as well as some standout performances. The transition from suave businessman with a secret life into the fearlessly haughty transvestite superhero is admirably conveyed, and the humorous character of Kylie, a tracksuit wearing `chav' drafted by General Krillgarth, provides some memorable moments.

Drawing on influences from classics such as Superman and Star Wars, fans of sci-fi will immediately feel at home in Catalina's fantasy universe. The digital special effects frame the on screen action well, whilst cleverly designed models are employed to give the production a tactile b-movie feel. The comedy element is camp and quintessentially British, but smart execution combined with the film's dramatic elements ensure that the overall effect is far from crass.

Overall Catalina is a quirky, charming and amusing pastiche that comes recommended to anyone looking for something a little different from a comedy. For a low budget production with high time aspirations the film is a triumph; what has been achieved here with highly modest means should prove an inspiration to young film makers everywhere.
