Do not buy this lamp,
By I bought two of these lamps at the same time for my desk. I returned one of them immediately to Staples because the plastic gear crumbled on the counter balance. After less than two months the second lamp plastic gear disintegrated. Staples had stopped carrying them. I tracked down Catalina for spare parts and after much delay, told me there were no spare parts for the gears. They offered to send me a new lamp which they did but it turned out to be a different lamp and lesser wattage which made it unusuable. I had to put plastic bands on the counterweights to get the lamps to stay up. Six months ago the transformer burned out on one lamps and the second lamp transformer just burned out today. So, in less than two years I've been through four lamps. If you buy this lamp you deserve all the trouble it will cause you. Take my warning. Catalina has some serious engineering and Chinese design issues.

Amazon Verified Purchase(What's this?)
I bought this for a desk. The reach is good. The brightness is good. The less bright of the two options is fine. However, the construction isn't great. Specifically, one important hinge is flimsy and only holds the lamp in positions it dictates. But overall it's decent price/performance. If the hinge holds out it will be fine for its purpose. But higher quality would have been worth spending a little more on.

Cheap Quality,
The gears operating the counterbalance are made of cheap plastic. The teeth break off very easily. Don't buy this item.
