From School Library Journal

PreSchool-Grade 2–Arnold once again embraces the absurd with this illustrated rendition of a traditional camp song. The title character is undeniably a peculiar protagonist: she's got only two hairs on her head, arms like an ape, big feet, and she's cross-eyed. Pity for the poor young lady with these atrocious attributes might be expected. However, the watercolor cartoons give each descriptive verse a positive spin. Catalina may only have two teeth, but she makes dental history. She uses the "…two holes in the bottom of her nose" as receptacles for "her fingers… and… her toes," a trick that earns her the respect of her fellow scouts. As she grows up and marries, her adoring father snaps photos, proudly capturing every oddity. Catalina enjoys her life and looks deliriously happy in all of the illustrations. Music is appended along with some interesting variations on her name. Arnold's trademark artwork reflects the wacky humor of this song, and will attract a young audience.–Piper L. More About the Author

Born in Elmira, New York, Tedd grew up in a family of six with three brothers. His family lived on a farm in Pennsylvania for several years then returned to Elmira until Tedd was ten years old. His father's work then required that they move to Gainesville, Florida. There, Tedd's first art lessons in an abandoned dentist's office over the Happy Hour pool hall eventually led to a fine arts degree from the University of Florida. He and his wife, Carol, started their family in Tallahassee where Tedd worked as a commercial illustrator. Carol, a Kindergarten teacher, drew Tedd's attention to children's books. Their first son, Walter, inspired his breakthrough picture book, No Jumping on the Bed!. His second son, William, now stars in No More Water in the Tub!, a sequel to his first book. He has now published more than 30 books as author and illustrator. When not working on his books, Tedd's interests include tennis, sketching, reading, coin collecting, and the computer."The inspiration to begin writing and illustrating for children came from my wife, Carol. As a kindergarten teacher, she collected picture books. I was attracted to their colorful pages and the way the words and pictures played with each other, much like the captioned cartoons I had drawn when I was young."Perhaps the biggest surprise of my career as an author is that I'm now going back to elementary school! Visiting young readers in classrooms and libraries is something I love. Kids keep me on my toes and they ask a lot of questions. The number one question seems to be, 'Where do you get your ideas?' It's also the hardest question to answer because every idea is different. Some ideas seem to pop out of thin air -- while I'm in the shower or walking the dog. Others come from reading or research. But most of my ideas come from my family and the things they do and say."For instance, one time when my first son, Walter, was five years old, I found him lying on the couch, looking pale as a ghost and clutching a Bible to his chest. He was praying! When I asked what was wrong, he wouldn't answer. In fact, he wouldn't even open his mouth. My wife, Carol, finally coaxed a response from him: he pointed inside his mouth. Carol exclaimed, 'You have a loose tooth!' Walter's eyes nearly popped out with fright. We quickly assured him that it was perfectly okay for his tooth to come loose and that a new one would replace it. But Carol and I looked at each other and realized that despite all our efforts to be good parents, we had somehow completely forgotten to warn Walter that teeth fall out! He had thought he was falling apart! I made a little note in my journal; then ten years later, I expanded that memory into my book Parts."Tedd Arnold lives in Elmira, New York, with his wife, Carol, two sons, Walter and William, two cats, Cody and Frankie, and one dog, Hershey.

My 14 month old daughter is completely addicted to this book! She loves it like no other. If I pick up this book, she will stop whatever she's doing, run over and jump into my lap to have this book read. When I'm finished reading, she wants to sit and read it herself for what seems like hours!! The illustrations are spectacular and the story is very fun to read. A real treat!

You know how camp songs go - they're silly, they're pointless, and they're fun to sing super fast.

The illustrations really help the song, showing (in comic fashion) how every verse - about how she puts her toes in her nose, about how she only has two teeth, about her enormous feet - only serves to make her happier and more successful in life.

A melody and some variations on the chorus are given in the back, along with the (sweet) story of how the author (really, the compiler and illustrator) learned the song from his future wife. If you can't read music, google suggests that some people sing this song to the tune of "Shortnin' Bread". (Google also finds you several more verses to this song that aren't included in this book, but that's no surprise.)

Hysterical, unique illustrations provide a second, unwritten story line that makes it enjoyable for children *and* parents. Poor little girl has such a long name that she has to make the best of it--and does--quite swimmingly. Simple music is written out at the end of the book so that you can sing it to your kids (my daughter's preference) OR just read it as a poem (my son's). Get ready for a serious case of the sillies!

I am a school librarian who works with kindergarteners. This is one book I read year after year at the beginning of school. It has everything little ones love - silliness, rhyming, music (oh yes, we sing it), and great illustrations. The book has high circulation stats. As a matter of fact, I am buying another copy of Catalina from Amazon because of the many little hands that have worn out our current copy.

Tedd Arnold's book is a wonderfully illustrated book with his usually googly-ping-pong ball eyed children. Great lyrics come to life in this fun and engaging book.

My third grade students love this book and learned the lyrics quickly and have such a fun time singing along each time I take the story out. It's great pick-me-up that never fails to make them smile.

I love this book, and was looking forward to using it with my class. Even though I paid expedited shipping, it took a really long time to come and didn't arrive in time to use. I have put it away for next year. I would give the book five stars, but I'm giving it three stars here because of the lengthy shipping time. "Expedited" seems to mean that they shipped it promptly, but they used the same slow shipping method. I think I paid over $6 for shipping, so was expecting something like priority mail.

I don't even want to think about "what" was smeared on the cover of this book. And there were a couple different "what"s smeared ... and on some internal pages as well. And lots of pages literally falling out of the book. Not as advertised, that's for SURE.
