About the Author

Vanessa Grant's love affair with writing fiction began during a protracted illness at the age of 12 when she decided to write a novel of her own, sitting up in bed using the typewriter she'd been given for her birthday. Not a computer, not an electric typewriter, but a then-state-of-the-art manual typewriter. The story, a romance, ground to a halt on page 50 but Vanessa never forgot the excitement of bringing her own characters to life. She later wrote three unpublished novels, developing her skills as a writer while living on a remote lighthouse during what she thinks of as her baby-making, basket weaving, beach-walking days.
In 1985 Vanessa's novel Pacific Disturbance was published in hardcover by Mills and Boon. She now has over 10 million books sold and has been translated into 15 languages. She also has written what one critic described as, "by far the best writing book I've ever read." Writing Romance, published by Self Counsel Press, won the Under the Covers Best Writing Book Award, and is currently in its third edition.
Over the years her love of storytelling and her curiosity about people led Vanessa to study psychology, volunteer on a crisis line, complete individual and relationship counselor training, volunteer as a peer counselor for a family life organization, and tell stories about life, love, and secrets. Vanessa is also an accountant, a university professor, a publisher of educational materials and eBooks, and a popular international speaker with considerable media experience.
Vanessa and her husband have lived on an island in the Pacific Northwest since returning from a two year sailing cruise to Mexico some years ago. Vanessa loves hearing from readers and from other writers.

4.0 out of 5 stars love & cultural barriers, August 14, 2011
This review is from: Catalina's Lover (Paperback)
32yo archaeologist reluctantly agrees to see Peruvian businessman Hero's father again after she left their family hacienda 14 years ago. She and Hero realize that they still share a powerful attraction but the same cultural differences prevent them from being together as before. Heroine eventually succumbs to an affair with Hero but knows that she can only be his mistress. She soon recognizes the futility of merely being his lover & sees the inevitability of him marrying another woman who's more socially suitable. How can their r/s survive their cultural differences?

This was a good Grant book. The pacing, emotional involvement, & pacing were good. The magnetic sexual chemistry & sex scenes matched their incendiary romance. Their socio-cultural differences were understandable barriers to their r/s & I liked how Grant flushed it out in the story. The 14-year gap b/w their initial romance & the current one emphasized Hero & heroine's character growth. Both of them (especially Hero) were steeped in the expectations of their family & social group & they weren't emotionally mature enough then to know what they wanted & take the risk of disappointing others in order to attain what is good for them. Their r/s barrier basically comes down to the choice b/w love & family expectations. I liked that heroine pursued her career goals & didn't drop everything just to be with Hero. I liked that Hero was willing to bend his typical Latino ways to support heroine's career.

Recommended.

Description from the book back cover:

'I claimed you, querida. I won't let you forget that you belong to me!' Juan Corsica Perez was a man who believed the earth belonged to him, and everyone in it. Only Cathy Jenan thought otherwise. They had known each other once, and once it had been wonderful, but now, as his prisoner, Cathy was in no mood for romance, only how was she going to get that into the head of the most stubborn man she had ever seen ...?
