Book Description

June 1992 Bibliographies and Indexes in World History, (Book 23)
In the years since the Holocaust, a vital, but increasingly dwindling resource has not been fully explored - the memories and perceptions of those who survived. Their testimony can supply us with the experiences, decisions, and feelings of Holocaust victims in a way that can not be recreated from documents and archival records alone. This catalogue is designed to provide full descriptive listings of 43 major holdings of audio and video tapes of interviews with Holocaust survivors, as well as a listing of smaller collections. Access is provided to more than 11,600 interviews. Each major entry begins with basic information on the location and access of the collection. This is followed by a summary of the content of each collection in as much detail as possible. The last portion of each major entry provides information on additional Holocaust material available in each respository, followed by comments of the archivist or director. This catalogue will be a valuable tool for historians and others researching the Holocaust and World War II, as well as topics in Jewish studies.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Among the most important but least utilized resources for comprehending the Holocaust is the large body of oral testimony by survivors. In part, these resources are underutilized because of their location in various archives whose collections are not well known. This excellent guide to about 12,000 oral and video testimonies helps solve this problem. This edition, larger than the first (which is relatively unknown), analyzes the collections in numerous ways. Entries, based on responses to a questionnaire, are arranged by state and given code numbers, and provide all or part of the following: location, contact person, hours, privileges, type and size, transcripts, guide, interview process, summary of collection, experience of the Jewish survivor, additional information, and comments. Most valuable are the summaries and experiences, which allow one to select testimonies by category of interviews (who include partisans, refugees, rescuers, escapees, and those in hiding), camp or ghetto, place of birth, religion, or gender. Ten useful appendixes, (which might have been replaced by an overall analytic index) identify format (audio, video, or both), collections with incomplete data, survivors by nation of birth, those who hid or passed as gentiles, ghettos, camps, rescuers, liberators, other groups (e.g., gypsies, Nuremberg officials), and a sample questionnaire. An outstanding source, highly recommended to all libraries." -- Choice
