Book Description

January 1, 1972
Here for the first time in the English language is a priced presentation of all the coins of the many German states that have been issued since 1800. The gold, silver and base metal coins of each kingdom, duchy, principality and city are listed chronologically with all the denominations of each issue together. Collectors will find here a catalog number for each coin type, the inclusive dates of issue and the metallic content. Legends and inscriptions. are translated into English and special footnotes explain the significance of unusual issues, the reasons and occasions for commemoratives, etc. Retail values based on auction records and dealers' price lists are shown for each listing. This catalog, one of a series of volumes covering the world's coinage, ("Catalogue of Scandinavian Coins" was the first), was also published in other languages. Historians and students will find this book particularly valuable since the history of the German nation is mirrored in its coins. This is the latest in a series of coin books reprinted by Ishi Press. For this we must thank Mario L. Sacripante, an avid collector of coins, who has loaned us coin books from his private library for these reprintings.

5.0 out of 5 stars You can not have too many catalogs, January 5, 2006

This review is from: Catalogue of German coins; Gold, silver and minor coins since 1800, with their valuations, (Hardcover)
This is an English translation of a book originally published in German. It contains most of the standard coins issued from 1800 through the publishing year. So naturally there are no Euros. There is also (intentionally) no record of notgeld. However the pictures are crisper than those in the "Standard Catalog of World Coins". There are a few different pictured coins that show this is not just an extract from other catalogs. You will find no KM numbers as references.

One big advantage if this book is the Synopsys of history of various German States and the images on their coins.

Example:
Bavaria takes its name form the Baiowarii tribe that inhabited the area about A.D. 500. The territory became part of The Frankish Kingdom, then the Carloigian Empire, Passing in 1180 to Otto III of Wittelsbach, an ancestor of the modern rulers of Bavaria.

1.0 out of 5 stars Not worth the paper it's printed on, October 20, 2011

This book is a terrible waste of money. Pictures are blurred and not able to see any detail. Listings for coins are not detailed in any way, shape, or form. Seems to me that the author took all the info printed from another book and called it his own. Absolutely terrible product. Don't expect to learn anything you don't know from this book.

2.0 out of 5 stars Don't waste your money, December 27, 2011
By

This book is a complete waste of your money. I bought it based on the other reviews here but cannot see where anyone can justify giving it 5 stars. It gives a publication date of 2011 but it is just a reprint of a 1969 book complete with valuations which are over 40 years out of date and is completely missing almost all the coins of West Germany and East Germany. The pictures are very low quality, far inferior to those available in the Krause catalogs. No information is given about the years each coin was minted, giving merely the first and last years. As I said, the valuations are 40 years out of date but even had they been current they would not be of much use as there is only one price per coin and everyone knows that it varies by year, mint and grade. For example, the current value of a Prussian 2 mark coin KM#506 varies from $10 to $3000 but is listed as worth $10. The reason I decided to buy the book was the comments about historical notes but these are so minimal as to be of little value - I could find ten times more by looking in Wikipedia.
