Book Description

December 14, 2006
This descriptive catalogue, comprising descriptions of some 364 sources held by 75 institutions and individuals, enumerates the remains of the written musical traditions for the early medieval period of an entire country. Each record is complemented by paleographical and codicological analyses, and the whole by a bibliography, by comprehensive indices of incipits and subjects, and by eight full-page plates. It thus illuminates a facet of medieval England which has never been studied in full and about which we know very little compared to our knowledge of pictorial art and letters. It will be indispensable not only for students of music and liturgy, but for medievalists in general. This book is published in association with the Plainsong and Medieval Music Society. K. D. HARTZELL is Professor of Music Emeritus, University at Albany, Albany, New York.

Editorial Reviews

Review

A landmark publication in the field of medieval music studies. Hartzell's achievement is nothing short of monumental, and the publishers have matched the wealth of his material with an elegant, generous layout and a fine binding. EARLY MUSIC TODAY This handsomely produced book is a remarkable achievement (and) deserves the epithet 'monumental' in a number of ways. (...) Hartzell has provided a massive amount of extremely useful information. PLAINSONG AND MEDIEVAL MUSIC A most useful guide to liturgico-musical practice in the period up to 1200 as it can be recovered from extant manuscript sources. EARLY MUSIC HISTORY A monumental achievement. (...) This is an amazing piece of work and all involved...should be congratulated. EARLY MUSIC REVIEWAll medieval musicologists are likely to uncover a precious find or two...and binding, paper and presentation are of a quality to make such an experience pleasurable...For this marathon act of collection and collation, Hartzell is to be most heartily congratulated and thanked. EARLY MUSIC Scholars will be grateful for the clarity of organization and the sheer magnitude of information provided. (A) well-produced and thoughtful descriptive catalogue. SPECULUMAn event of major significance for musicologists who work on medieval English sources. It is difficult to over-emphasise the importance of (this) catalogue...truly a treasure trove representing a labour of love over a lifetime. MUSICOLOGY REVIEW
