Book Description

October 1994 0471286141 978-0471286141 1
Catalytic Air Pollution Control Commercial Technology Since the introduction of the automobile catalytic converter in 1976, many new catalytic processes have been developed, which are being applied to everything from utilities and chemical plants to home heating and aircraft intake air. Now, get the most complete, up-to-date introduction to these revolutionary technologies available—from one easy-to-understand source. Written by a practicing scientist and an engineer with extensive hands-on experience, Catalytic Air Pollution Control: Commercial Technology is the first book of its kind to present today’s uses of catalysis for solving real-world environmental problems, and to provide direction for future research. It gives the beginning as well as seasoned industrial scientist and engineer a "nuts-and-bolts" view of the most important catalytic technologies now in use. Catalyst composition details are included wherever possible. You’ll appreciate the book’s simple, descriptive language and readability, especially if you have little background in catalysis. First, you get a general introduction to catalytic processes and the general preparation, characterization, kinetics, and deactivation of commercial catalysts. Next, you’ll explore current technology as it is being used to control pollution from: Mobile sources, including:
  • emissions from gasoline and diesel exhausts
  • ozone inside high-flying aircraft
Stationary sources, including:
  • volatile organic emissions from chemical processing plants and power generation stations
  • nitrogen oxides, hydrocarbons, and carbon monoxide from power plants, and rich and lean burn stationary engines
The authors also discuss breakthrough processes that may soon have a major impact on catalytic environmental applications. Complete with international examples, this cutting-edge book is essential for all those investigating how to abate harmful emissions for compliance with environmental regulations.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"This book will be of benefit to those working in the immediate area of catalytic pollution control, as well as those concerned with broader aspects of environmental chemistry both at the professional and student levels. Librarians are encouraged to ensure this volume is on their shelves." (Platinum Metals Review, March 2010)

From the Back Cover

The chemistry of superacids deals with acid systems stronger than conventional strong mineral Bronsted acids such as sulfuric acid and Lewis acids such as aluminum trichloride. The first edition of Superacid Chemistry, published in 1985, quickly became the definitive work in the field. Since that time, however, the field has grown exponentially, with the development of new superacid systems and innovative superacid applications. This Second Edition of Superacid Chemistry has been published to bring the acclaimed book fully up to date with all these new developments.

Superacid Chemistry features a team of pioneering authors in the field headed by George Olah, the 1994 Nobel Laureate in Chemistry. The book covers:

  • General aspects of superacid chemistry, including types of superacids and experimental techniques for acidity measurements
  • Superacid systems, including primary, binary, ternary, and solid superacids
  • Carbocations in superacids, including methods of generating carbocations in superacids and methods and techniques in the study of carbocations
  • Heterocations in superacids, including onium ions, enium ions, homo-,and heteropolyatomic cations, and cations of group 6-12 elements
  • Superacid catalyzed reactions, including conversion of saturated hydrocarbons and alkylation of aromatic hydrocarbons

Extensive references are provided throughout the book to guide readers to the primary literature for further in-depth investigations. In short, this Second Edition meets the growing need for current information on superacid chemistry among researchers in inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry in order to support and advance their research. --This text refers to an alternate Hardcover edition.

This review is from: Catalytic Air Pollution Control: Commercial Technology (Hardcover)
I am a korean graduate school student majoring environmental eng'g. I think this book is very useful to students who study environmental eng'g, chemical eng'g and automobil eng'g and researchers who work motor companines. There are fundamental information about the catalyst of air pollution control and principals of fuel combustion and production of pollutants from emission and so on. So I'd like to translate this book to korean.
