Editorial Reviews

Review

"... this book has something for everyone, from first time cat sailors to seasoned racers. ... and on sails gives some very good info on draft distribution and modern trim methods for mains and jibs. This book is a wealth of modern, current, useful information." -- Dave Calvert, Calvert Sails

"Fragale has used a lifetime of his sailing experience to weed out all those wrong answers and theories we have all had to sift through. Not only is the inforamtation in this book accurate, it is cutting edge and deadly to the competition." -- Enrique Rodriguez, World Class Sailor

"Michael Fragale has written a very thorough book that is capable of taking catamaran sailors from the learning process for the biginner on through the advanced tweaking phase required to win the big ones. This has it all." -- Rick White, Hall of Fame Cat Sailor

"This is a good basic book for those starting out in catamarans, as well as those sailors at the intermediate level. What I liked most is it's not written generically -- rather it mentions specific classes of boats and talks about them." -- Gordon Isco, Chairman, US Sailing Multihull Council

About the Author

Michael Fragale's first sail on a catamaran was after a hurricane in 1971 on a Hobie 14. His first thought was, "I've got to get one of these." So, he purchased a Tornado catamaran and joined the Long Branch Ice Boat and Yacht Club. There was a small Tornado fleet at the club where he was first introduced into catamaran racing. He enjoyed sailing that class of boat for seven years. Also, during that he was selling and rigging Hobies and Prindles at Surf Sailing in New Jersey.

In 1982 a Prindle fleet formed locally on the Shrewsburry River, so he began sailing a Prindle 18. He served as Commodore over the next few years.

He has since enjoyed regular sailing in both rivers and oceans, studying the dynamics of shaping the sails and its effect on the performance.

1.0 out of 5 stars Unfulfilled promises, September 7, 2000
By A Customer
This review is from: Catamaran Tuning Guide (Paperback)
The first chapters of the book are pretty basic and the experienced sailor will not learn much. The last chapters are more interesting: they explain what happens if you pull on a certain string, tigthen this sidestays, etc.

The presentation and graphics are so low in quality that they seems to have been done on a computer from the mid 80's. It's also pretty obvious that there was no quality control on the text since long passages are sometimes repeated on the same page.

At this price, you can buy books with color photographs, clear graphics and drawings on high quality paper. In its present format, this book is not worth more than $ 5.

2.0 out of 5 stars Poor graphic quality ruins a useful book, November 24, 1999

This review is from: Catamaran Tuning Guide (Paperback)
The poor quality of graphics in this print relegates the intelligibility of this book to near zero. A number of ideas in cat set-up are explained in photos and diagrams which are rendered in low resolution.I expect more from a text (e.g. catamaran racing for the 90's)
