I didn't realize when getting this that I needed the 5-6 player expansion, and the cities and knights expansion before I could use it. I thought you could directly expand it on the original, but that can't be done. I have no doubt it will be fun, but keep in mind that you need the 5-6player expansion and the cities and knights expansion before you could use this item.

The amazon description and the "Game tree" that came with the original settlers game says you need only Cities and Knights along with the original settlers game to play this. But this is not true, you also need the original settlers 5-6 player extension to play. The extra hexagonal tiles and the 2 new color player tokens don't come with this(only the new tokens for cities and knights for the new player colors come with this). It comes with more progress cards etc. To play this, you need Settlers + Settlers 5-6 player + Cities and Knights. Like usual, it is fun to play! It seems a little expensive for a few tokens and cards though.

I loved Catan, and think the Cities and Knights expansion is a lot of fun too. However, it's pretty rare to find 5-6 people who all are experienced enough at Catan to want to play the expansion version, and the time requirement (often more than two hours) can be an issue too. More often we play with a small group of fans and don't need the expansion, or just play the regular Catan with that expansion. But if you've got a group of hard-core Catan fans that are willing to play for hours, this could be great fun.

Durability - I gave it a 3/5 because the cards wear after about 20 plays.

Fun/Overall - 4/5
I took a star off because it feels a little needless that I'm paying so much for this expansion. I had to buy the base game, then the base Cities and Knights expansion, then the 5-6 player base game expansion, and finally the 5-6 player Cities and Knights expansion. I definitely feel like I got milked here. Way too many purchases needed to end up playing ONE game with 5 other people. That being said, the game is incredible. It's the perfect blend of Monopoly and RISK! It's by far my favorite board game of all time.

EDIT: Jan 20, 2013
More than a year later, we're still playing this game regularly. At this point we don't even play the base game [because it's basically a roll-off]; the Cities and Knights expansion adds significant depth to the gameplay. Luck of the rolls still plays a major role, but strategic gameplay is rewarded well in this version.
Upgraded "durability" stars to 4 - after a full year of regular use, the cards are holding up fairly well.

This is only the extension for the main game Cities and Knights (which means to play with 6 people you need Settlers of Catan, the 5-6 Extension for Catan, Cities and Knights, and then finally this 5-6 Extension for C&K). Once you get to that point, C&K really comes alive, not only does it expand so much on the original game, with 6 people it is just amazing all the game-play there is. If you can get past the somewhat pricey cost of the games it is really worth it! I have yet to have a problem with the games' quality (things breaking) but with the small pieces something could get lost easily. The 5-6 extension is made with the same materials as the standard edition--high quality and great detail. Finally I will say I am very pleased Mayfair Games overall; the one time I had to contact their customer service I was met with a quick, friendly response and the solution to my problem (within barely a day i got an email response!). Great games and service, can't get much better than that!

I LOVE this game and could play it for days on end. The expansion makes playing with 5-6 people not only possible, but much more fun with the expanded board and additional colored settlements, cities, roads, etc. for more players. One word of caution: make sure you know which edition of Settlers you begin with. Mayfield has updated the board from the original (and even a second time after that) and while the main pieces fit together fine, the graphics are different and the boarder pieces don't fit together at all. I bought an older version of the basic game and Cities and Knights a few years ago, then decided to get the 5-6 player expansions for both and didn't notice I'd ordered the newer edition. Its still playable, just a little distracting.

My entire family *loves* this game - including my 5 yr old. I love getting to see how the kids handle some grown up situations (like bartering for goods) and also interesting to watch them learn and develop interest in something that makes them think in different ways. There is a learning curve to this game, but that's part of the fun. From start to finish, this game holds the attention of everyone in my family; it is never the same twice (gets the old thinker working). Helps kids develop many skills - bartering, patience, analysis, critical thinking, foresight - and is fun, too. This is one game we can get out and the teenagers actually want to participate.

This game has caused a lot of anger and frustration between my wife and I. The game is fun until my wife rolls a 7. She always puts the robber on me which makes me so mad. It is hard not to take personally. Our marriage has honestly for the most part been a sweet bliss before Catan. Catan has seriously caused more conflict and fights in our relationship than anything else. I try hard not to take games personally but this one hits me the wrong way. Be careful when playing against loved ones.
