4.0 out of 5 stars Expansion for the expansion's expansion
I didn't realize when getting this that I needed the 5-6 player expansion, and the cities and knights expansion before I could use it. I thought you could directly expand it on the original, but that can't be done. I have no doubt it will be fun, but keep in mind that you need the 5-6player expansion and the cities and knights expansion before you could use this item.

2.0 out of 5 stars Long, long game.
I don't care what the box says, this game is not gonna be a short one. Cities and Knights all by itself can get long (and, I think, overly complex, but that's a different review...), but doing it with 5 or 6 people just gets to be a grind after awhile. This is especially true if you have fairly evenly matched players. I love Catan, but I can't really recommend this...

I loved Catan, and think the Cities and Knights expansion is a lot of fun too. However, it's pretty rare to find 5-6 people who all are experienced enough at Catan to want to play the expansion version, and the time requirement (often more than two hours) can be an issue too. More often we play with a small group of fans and don't need the expansion, or just play the regular Catan with that expansion. But if you've got a group of hard-core Catan fans that are willing to play for hours, this could be great fun.

4.0 out of 5 stars Like expected, but needs Settlers 5-6 player extension, September 16, 2011

The amazon description and the "Game tree" that came with the original settlers game says you need only Cities and Knights along with the original settlers game to play this. But this is not true, you also need the original settlers 5-6 player extension to play. The extra hexagonal tiles and the 2 new color player tokens don't come with this(only the new tokens for cities and knights for the new player colors come with this). It comes with more progress cards etc. To play this, you need Settlers + Settlers 5-6 player + Cities and Knights. Like usual, it is fun to play! It seems a little expensive for a few tokens and cards though.

My entire family *loves* this game - including my 5 yr old. I love getting to see how the kids handle some grown up situations (like bartering for goods) and also interesting to watch them learn and develop interest in something that makes them think in different ways. There is a learning curve to this game, but that's part of the fun. From start to finish, this game holds the attention of everyone in my family; it is never the same twice (gets the old thinker working). Helps kids develop many skills - bartering, patience, analysis, critical thinking, foresight - and is fun, too. This is one game we can get out and the teenagers actually want to participate.

I purchased the older model of the expansion set. The only difference is the color of the box and the style of the game pieces. They were in excellent condition and had never been opened. I was very pleased.

We love the Catan series of games, and Cities and Knights is a great expansion. It makes the game a little more complicated and challenging, but retains all the fun of the original.

Durability - I gave it a 3/5 because the cards wear after about 20 plays.

Fun/Overall - 4/5
I took a star off because it feels a little needless that I'm paying so much for this expansion. I had to buy the base game, then the base Cities and Knights expansion, then the 5-6 player base game expansion, and finally the 5-6 player Cities and Knights expansion. I definitely feel like I got milked here. Way too many purchases needed to end up playing ONE game with 5 other people. That being said, the game is incredible. It's the perfect blend of Monopoly and RISK! It's by far my favorite board game of all time.

Out of all of the versions of Catan this is my favorite. The expansion is a must because it is sad when you have to turn players down.

If you are looking at this I would assume you know what Settlers is. That being said I love this extension. It brings new rules and some interesting twists to the game. After you learn the new stuff to learn it takes about the same amount of time as a regular game of Settlers. The only reason I don't see this as durable is because it's a lot of small pieces and if a child gets a hold of them you will be finding the pieces in diapers. However used properly you aren't gonna run into anything like breaking the game.

4.0 out of 5 stars Make sure you are ordering the right Expansion Set, May 4, 2011

Great game, however, make sure you are ordering the right expansion sets. Expansions for "5-6 players" can not be interchanged with original Cantan games meant for 3-4 players. Do your research.
