one of my favorite books of all time. I enjoy it each time i read it. Still, it's definitely not for everyone.

I expected more of a plot, not a book full of character development that goes nowhere. About halfway through, I went to the last chapter and it ended up not much different from the rest of the book. I think the audience was post-WW-II adults who would understand the goofyness of military life in a war situation. And of the odd characters inhabiting the Italian Theatre, Probably no different from many other war areas. I was disappointed.

I can't believe this book didn't get 5 stars straight across! This is the funniest satire of war that exists. The characters are wonderfully brought to full 3 dimensional life right before your eyes. The pages turn themselves and the thinner the right side of the book gets, when open, the more you regret it is going to end and I guess in a way that is a Catch -22 in itself. It is a charactature of World War II in Europe and a charactature of everyone who fought and lived through it there without diminishing the horror of it all ; which is no mean feat. Jump! Jump up and buy it.

While the book's material is fairly good, the author jumps around instead of going straight through the story in order. If you do not mind that, you will enjoy the book. For my husband, he did not enjoy it very much for this reason. He says he likes his fiction to be straightforward and informative.

Even though this is a book everybody knows of, nobody really knows what it is about. Even after reading it I am still not quiet sure what it is about, which is the point (nobody really knows what is happening during war). Yes it is about Yossarian who is reluctant to fly the increasing amount of missions, but it is also showing the chaos and the effects that war really has and what it really takes from you. It has these really great moments explaining that, but there are also a lot of moments that make you doubt humanity. How do people so stupid get such high positions? Overall it is a very good and accurate book of war even though I think that it could do with a lot less prostitution. But that is once again just showing the accuracy of soldier's points of view. I would recommend this book if you are interested in war, but just know that it can be slow and hard to read at points. I give this book 3 stars because it had good stuff in it, but it was hard to get through (especially because there were parts that were not told in chronological order).

Joseph Heller forever changed American fiction with the publication of "Catch-22." His darkly comic, searing depiction of the insanity of war will have you laughing and feeling deeply repulsed at the same time. The characters are brilliantly evoked and memorable. This book polarizes readers, some of whom find its unique plot structure too difficult to follow. However, stick with it for the first 25 pages and you will be taken into Heller's world completely. A life-changing book when I first read it at age 15 and I have read it more than 50 times over the years. The accuracy of Heller's depictions of human character can be seen in today's headlines. Highly recommended.

It was difficult at first because it is so far out, exaggerated. However, I was able to ride with it after a while. My days in the 8th Air Force were certainly a great deal more conservative - placid in comparison. I guess it was the author's intent for the story to be outlandish, over the top, and thus amusing, hilarious.
